The Author: Dr. Stephen Quinn of Deakin University in Australia has an extensive background in all areas of media. He has worked for the Press Association, BBC-TV, Independent Television News, and The Guardian in London, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in Sydney, Television New Zealand, and the Middle East Broadcasting Center in Dubai. Since 1991 he has taught journalism in New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States.

A nicely wriiten book.

I have been reading books written by Stephen Quinn for quite sometime now. I not only like his writing style which is always very clear and to the point but also the depth of his writings which always shows his grasp over the subject. The book in question is a very good example of this. I consider it a very useful book for the students and teachers alike. The book sums up the whole debate about the convergent journalism. It is a nicely structured book which covers almost every aspect of the subject in reasonable detail.

The war ended in total victory for Chile, and that country's emergence thereafter as 'the Prussia of South America', while it cost Peru a lucrative province, and Bolivia its outlet to the Pacific coast.

Gabriele Esposito is an Italian native, and a long-time student of South American wars. He has previously written magazine articles on the War of the Triple Alliance amongst other subjects and is the author of MAA 499 Armies of the War of the Triple Alliance 1864-70, published in March 2015.

The War of the Pacific...

During 1879-1883, Chile fought a war with Peru and Bolivia for possession of the coastal strip along the Pacific Ocean that divided them. It is a conflict that barely registers in the U.S. historical consciousness, but the fighting featured difficult battlefields and some extraordinary examples of expeditionary warfare. Its end result rewrote the boundaries between the three countries.

It all started over nitrates on Bolivia's stark coastal plain. The war pitted Chile's small but highly professional army and navy against Peru and Bolivia's larger but less well trained and equipped forces. It ended with the occupation of Peru's capital of Lima and the crushing of an insurgency in the rugged Andes. In between, author Gabriele Esposito provides a terse narrative of the fighting, and illustrator Giuseppe Rava offers some excellent color plates of the wide variety of uniforms in use during the conflict. The text is nicely supplemented with period photographs, a few maps, and sketches of more uniforms. This is an interesting account of a conflict almost unheard of in North America, but with lasting consequences. Recommended.

Excellent book covering the most important and dramatic military conflict of the Andean region. It offers a very clear and objective review of the real causes of the war and the military operations. Good pictures, most of them fron chilean archives.

GREAT!

I just recently purchased this book and it was one that was difficult to put down. While there were a few bits that I didn't find too terribly funny, the vast majority of them were very funny. Some of his bits were even laugh out loud hysterical. This book is grouped up into what the different stand-up routines are about, which I liked because it was well organized and jokes weren't just thrown around randomly. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone who's a fan of the comedian and the character Jerry Seinfeld.

Easy reading, but probably for fans only

I received this book in hard cover format as a gift, being a fan of the show and stand up performances, and enjoyed it tremendously. That having been said, it is a not much more than a light reading experience, and at under 200 pages (mostly lightly filled) is little more than a mirror of his most well known material. Fans like myself will not be disappointed, but this is not an insightful expose of what makes Jerry tick, and moreover is really just selling ice to eskimos. Good fun, but don't expect too much

Solid book for applications of Microeconomics

I had this book for a micro class that was focused on strategy in my MBA program.
It was a rich source of information. The only real big issue I had with it was that it assumed so much previous micro knowledge, that you really need to have taken a micro class at some level for it to make sense. There is a chapter that introduces most of the stuff you would cover in a micro class, but it is just one chapter and not an in-depth look at all you should know.

The other issue was more based on the structure of my class, but is based partly on the book. The first eighty percent of the book is based on external strategy, but I know that firm structure is important, especially in terms of labor versus capital. In the sections that we covered, that there seemed to be an acceptance of some sort of monolithic firm that makes decisions in the markets. The only labor issue was in the history , section in one of the first chapters where the authors hit on Taylorism very briefly. Other than that, the internal structure of the firm was left until the last unit, and I would bet that my professor was not the first to elide that section. I would want to see firm structure more interspersed with how the firms compete in the market.

Other than those two issues, I was impressed with the book, and would have kept it for a reference if it did not have a nice cash value.

The below is a summation I wrote for the class, inspired by this book:

There was a story tossed around at some point about Henry Fordâ€™s crowning jewel, the River Rouge manufacturing plant. It was said that Ford, who owned the mines for the coal and iron ore and the plantations of rubber trees for the rubber, would have the ships unload their cargo on one end and the other end would spit out fully formed Ford automobiles. This is an example of perfect vertical integration from tree to tearing up the country roads. It is also, what may look to be the best way to realize profit in a market system is vertical integration. A firm will not have to be at the mercy of suppliers, and they can capture whatever profit the supplier firm might have, thus creating more profit within the firm.

It is simplistic and wrong. One of the key insights of microeconomics is that there is a whole constellation of factors to take into consideration when looking at integration, either vertical or horizontal. These are termed â€œmake-or-buyâ€ decisions (Besanko et al. p. 99) and they determine if a firm should obtain an input from a supplier on the market or bring it in-house. The ultimate takeaway is that the profit the supplier firms create is hard to capture because the supplier firms have their own learning curve and their own economies of scale. It may make no sense for an automobile manufacturer to make their own airbags when every manufacture needs airbags, and a supplier can specialize and sell airbags to several companies. This allows the supplier to have lower costs because they are operating at scale where a singular manufacture of automobiles would have higher costs because they are manufacturing for only themselves. The potential exist for the manufacture to be a supplier for other manufacturers, but that is rare because other manufactures do not want to be reliant on competitors for suppliers. This is why Delphi and Mopar were spun off the larger parent companies, and they have gone through further specialization themselves. A further incentive to buy in the market is that by having multiple suppliers a firm can buy an input at the market price and be shielded from any supply chain disruption. Competitive firms do realize a profit, but bringing production of an input in house is no guarantee of capturing that profit both because the supplier is working at scale and there is a potential for the supplier to get lost in the bureaucracy of the firm and the potential profits instead become costs to overhead. Ultimately, it can be the firm that does the least that is the most efficient because it can then utilize the learning curve and the economies of scale for that one thing that they do.

There are other important takeaways of strategic microeconomics. An important thing to take into consideration is that the market is not everywhere and anywhere. A lot of goods and services are available through the internet. Call up Amazon and hope you find a good price and can trust the reviews, and you can buy most anything near the market price depending on how you get it shipped to you. Other products are very tied to the location of the consumer and the supplier. If a particular sweater is only available in Mongolia, and the firm does not ship it, then the buyer has to both find the sweater and go to Mongolia to obtain it. The location of a firm has some very real drivers on how much the customer is willing to pay. The ultimate cost of a good is not just the price paid in market, but also the time it takes to find it and get to it. There is the gas paid and the depreciation of the car, and the opportunity cost involved with the travel. What does a potential customer give up in terms of going to Mongolia to get that sweater? It can be so much that the firm could give them away to American customers and they would not be able to. Instead, the market for that sweater is more realistically geographically defined. Mitigating these search costs (Besanko et al. p. 179) is why it is so common to see multiple locations of some stores. In Chicago, there are Dunkinâ€™ Donuts and Walgreens stores almost every other block. The reason is that though they sell differentiated products, the next best option is similar enough they have to put their stores everywhere or else they will lose potential sales to competitors.

A third important take-away from studying the strategy of competitive markets is the importance of the demand curve. In macroeconomics, the demand curve is given and it is more conceptual, but the slope of the demand curve is important. It is also not wholly a straight line. Individual markets have their own demand curve, and they can be empirically measured to show the inverse relationship between quantity and price, so that the demand curve is a downward sloping line. This has two interesting consequences (Besanko et al. p. 20). First is that an individual firmâ€™s price flexibility is based on the demand curve. The less of a slope the demand curve has, also meaning the more elastic that demand is the less power an individual firm has to set prices. This can be seen in a perfectly competitive market. All the firms in a perfectly completive market have to charge the one price that is also the market rate where the average total cost curve and the marginal cost curve intersect. The downward sloping demand curve has an important consequence at the other end of potential market structures, in a monopoly. In a monopoly, the seller has pricing power, but they still have to face the quantity consequences of that pricing. If they try to take the price higher, they will lose customers. There is a theoretical point of price elasticity called perfectly inelastic demand, where the demand curve is a horizontal line, but that does not reflect the real world. Even in a world where a company had a monopoly on breathable oxygen, there would be a slope to the demand curve because ultimately, the willingness to pay would still be infinite, but the actual ability to pay would be finite. Ergo, there would be a backwards slope to the demand curve, and the monopolist is price constrained.

These and other ideas in microeconomics are crucial takeaways from the science. Some things that may look to be common sense on the surface are actually more complex once the math is grafted on the too easy narrative statements. Integration is not always perfect, there is a cost to search, and the demand curve can be limiting. Any prospective manager, as well as current manager, should be cognizant of these results of microeconomics.

Amazon Pellegrino Purchase

I found Summer at the Villa Rosa by Nicky while traveling in Italy. So loving the family in that book and the Italian customs, I wanted to find another. i enjoyed the interaction of the characters in Villa Girls. I have five girlfriends who travel together and the lives of the Villa girls seemed believable. I loved the food throughout the book.

Because I always need a vacation!

I picked up The Villa Girls because I was wanted a seaside novel that I hoped would be a good summer read. This novel alternated between chapters focusing on Rosie, a young woman who recently lost her parents, and Enzo, a young Italian man on the path to taking over his family's olive oil business. Rosie was insecure but harbored a need to fit in and belong again. The book began when she stumbled into a friendship with Addolorata that landed her in a villa in Spain and resulted in her placement as the fourth girl in the exclusive club, the Villa Girls.

When the girls made a pact that they would always make time for similar getaways in the future, I anticipated making several journeys with them to similarly exclusive locales. I had hoped that this would be a book that focused on four friends in the seaside villa like The Summer Girls and The Best Of Us. Instead, the action that took place in villas was minor compared to the time spent following Rosie's life in New York. Aside from Addolorata, the other two villa girls were hardly in the book, although they had plenty of sass to make their presence well known.

Rosie was swept into Addolorata's family where food and fighting were normal behavior at the large Sunday family meals. That environment helped Rosie move past her parents' deaths and open up to her friend, and that journey was endearing to watch. Enzo was the dutiful son everyone assumed would take over the family's olive oil farm and the significance of his place in the story wasn't clear until the end. I wasn't overly excited by Enzo's story, and the book would have been fine without him, but I did appreciate that both narratives honed in on the Italian family dynamic, something I really enjoyed reading about that since I am Italian!

Although this wasn't what I was expecting, it was a good read. The author's easy writing style gave this an air of fun even though there were series topics discussed. I would read more by this author.

Romantic, summer holiday escapism...

What more can one ask for over the summer/Christmas holiday period than lying down with a bit of chick-lit. How blissful and escapist! I had forgotten how intensely enjoyable a bit of relaxing, romantic and light reading can be. And you can read extraordinarily quickly which enables you to move onto the next one...

And, to take the bliss one step further, how about a setting of southern Italy, to an olive estate, owned and operated by the one family for some generations - oh the history, the family intrigues, the wine, the food, the olives!!!! The bliss goes on and on.

Rosie is a school girl in London when the story begins. She has recently lost her parents in a horrific road accident and is living unhappily and aimlessly with her aunt and uncle. She still goes to school and quite by accident strikes up a friendship with an Italian girl from school, Addolorata who takes her under her wing slowly introduces her to life. The first step in this process is a holiday at a villa in Spain with two other girls from school. Surprisingly this goes extremely well, and Rosie gradually begins to find her feet, ably assisted by Addolorato and her Italian family who own and run, none other than an Italian restaurant! Quelle surprise!

At the same time as Rosie is coping with the curve balls of life, in Italy Enzo is being groomed to take over the management of the olive estate from his father at some time in the future. Despite the estate being run by the men in the family, it is Enzo's fiery and strong grandmother who really runs the show and is determined that the estate will retain its prestigious international reputation. There is pressure on Enzo to find a young local woman to marry, but he continually resists.

Inevitably of course, as in all good chick lit, Rosie and Enzo are destined to meet, and this is on a second villa holiday that the girls decide to take two years after the first. And as in all good romances there are complications and difficulties until, naturally the inevitable happens and the two are reunited.

Oh yes it is all so predictable, and delicious and gorgeous, but who cares! The writing is delightful - the gloom and oppression of London vs the sunshine and brilliance of the Italian country side. And the food - Mamma Mia! I don't know if the writer has a background in food, but she writes about Italian food with love, joy and passion. Although from Liverpool and now living in New Zealand, her father is Italian and surely this must have something to do with it!

So to take you away from your ordinary life, a little bit of Italy and romance and food combined could be the perfect recipe.
