Thus, despite the inevitable abstractness of marcrosociological theory, the papers in this volume—which have been published separately since the Second World War—have a quality of vivid substantiality that makes the theoretical statements they present easier to comprehend.

Professor Shils has attempted to develop a theory that has a place for more than those parts of society that are generated from the biological nature of human beings and those parts that are engendered by the desires of individuals, acting for themselves or for groups and categories of individuals, to maintain and increase their power over other human beings and to secure material goods and services for themselves. He has argued that there are constituents of society in which human beings seek and cultivate connections with objects that transcend those needed to satisfy biological necessity and the desire for material objects and power over others. This third stratum of social existence, he concludes, cannot be reduced to the other two and cannot be disregarded in any serious attempt to understand the function of any society. Thus Edward Shils, without disregarding its many valuable achievements, has nevertheless parted ways with much of modern sociology.

For this collection of papers the author has written an introductory intellectual autobiography that places each essay in the setting of the development of his thought and that connects it with his other writings.

Unlike a previous comment, I have found this to be of more value than just a wall decoration. Sifu Louie Jac Man is a legend in Southern Mantis, demonstrating correct posture and hands.I still look up at it when training, and the maxims are also of great value.If you have students, it is also of great value as a reminder of posture, but also as a reminder of who is one of the Sifus responsible for the knowledge and transmission of this art. If you aren't a practitioner of this art, then I can see where it will be of little or no value, simply because a true martial artist would KNOW that this poster is not a stand alone material for instruction. Sifu Hagood has put out numerous material to aid in knowledge and practice of Southern Mantis.

Meticulously written and illustated - a pleasure to use

A refreshing approach to teaching is reflected throughout The Complete Guide to Blender Graphics which is a book meticulously tailored for new Blender users. When learning to master the graphical user interface (GUI) with its access to the functions for modeling, rendering and animating beginners feel as if they have a patient instructor sitting beside them guiding them every step of the way.

Blender is a comprehensive program which includes modeling objects and characters, the application of colors and textures, the creation of scenes for still images and animations and rendering with Blender's inbuilt system or external render engines. The book explains the use of the interface and the many tools included in Blender in a step by step method which guides the student gently through the process.

Blender instructors, as well as students, welcome The Complete Guide to Blender Graphics because in addition to the detail and reliability of the content, the author has taken an empathetic approach towards teaching beginners. Excellent Concept - Poorly Executed

Virtually everything I know is self-taught and I rely heavily on books. I actually like to read manuals. When I decided to learn Blender I was thrilled that a book was actually available somewhere. Blender books are very hard to find and the Blender site wiki is almost as intimidating as the program. I didn't hesitate to snatch up this book.

By all appearances, it is a beautiful book. The quality is top notch. The text is clear and the illustrations are perfect. Thus earning the two stars. When you go to use it, you'll quickly discover where the other three stars were lost.

This is not a book filled with tutorials, it is definitely a reference book. The contents do not flow very well and it almost seems to be written by someone without strong English skills. You would think that someone would have cleaned this up for such a high quality publication. It's not impossible to get through, just not the best.

The other issue is the material that is not here. Blender is extremely progressive and they make updates all the time. Recent updates are enormous and include Cycles and Bmesh. These are not trivial features. This is no fault of the author, it just happens. In the world of Blender this is a huge problem and in retrospect, now I understand why there aren't many Blender books.

Those two problems are annoying, but not a deal breaker. However, the biggest problem with this book is the index, it is awful. If you are familiar with most programming reference books, or "bibles", you'll know that the indexes are extensive and meticulous. The author knows that they are dealing with people that will need to refer quickly to a passage for a specific technique. How can you possibly find anything without this reference? For all I know, the book could be a complete treasure trove of information, but I don't have a photographic memory. I would never be able to find it again, if it did exist.

The last time I tried to use this book it ended in such utter frustration that I decided to use the Amazon Trade-In program and at least recoup some of my money. The book was simply worthless to me. If you are a book learner, like myself, you're out of luck with Blender. My best suggestion is a tutorial site like CG Cookie combined with the Blender wiki. Not ideal, but that's my conclusion.

This book is to be highly commended for teaching the basics of Blender modeling and animation in a clearly written, logical step by step method. It is a quality book which is user friendly from start to finish! It is an excellent book for getting started with Blender because the well written text is very easy to follow and is complemented by high quality images and diagrams. I recommend The Complete Guide to Blender Graphics to anyone wishing to learn computer modeling and animation using Blender and it would also be a great textbook tutorial or reference manual. I have no hesitation in giving this quality publication five stars.

Braces, Mean Girls, Crushes and Real-Life Teen Drama

Smile starts with Raina as a typical pre-teen...until she falls and her two front teeth fall out. She's not only in major pain, but scared, and her trip to the dentist doesn't yield the greatest news; they can put the one tooth they found back in but the other is stuck up in her gums, but she'll have to wear braces. Turns out, there was bone damage, and she endures the braces only to find that her teeth wind up embedded in her gums, leaving her feeling like she's a freak.

Her so-called friends don't help, with their perpetual teasing, but Raina adjusts to being a "brace-face" and weathers typical teenage crushes. As she moves on to a new high school, her friends keep on teasing her and playing pranks, until she finally decides she can seek out new friends who accept as she is.

It's hard not to wince at some of the tooth trials, but Raina is a trooper as she toughs out numerous orthodontist and endodondist and other "dontist" appointments, all rendered in Telgemeier's wonderful drawing style, which complements her story perfectly.

The book ends happily, with a big, toothy smile, and Raina learning that she can find friends who stick by her and don't make fun of her.

I am in middle school and this book made me feel special that I was strong. It made me feel to stand up for yourself and don't care what other people think. This book as a great message for 5 graders and middleschoolers, it inspired me to stay strong and it had a life that I have its totally realistic.

Great new series

I enjoyed the characters in this new series. Seems the writing was tighter than her other series. Good story, good character development, unexpected twist. Looking forward to reading more about these people. Love the setting of this series. I'm reading in 30 degree weather but feeling warm as I read about the sun and beach!

Even though I received this book for free for an honest review, I could not finish it. Too dark. Too much violence. Sorry, just not my kind of mystery. Actually, in five chapters I didn't get to a mystery.

Cecil John Rhodes made a fortune from diamonds and gold, became prime minister of the Cape, and had a country named after him, but his ambitions were far greater than that. When he was still in his twenties, after a meeting with General Gordon of Khartoum, Rhodes set up a Secret Society with the aim of establishing a new world order. The society, disciplined on Jesuit-style rules, became Rhodes’s lifelong obsession, and after his death it lived on and grew under the leadership of his executor, Lord Alfred Milner.
The society played a key role in the governance of Britain during the Great War and the peace terms to end it, and it was linked to appeasement initiatives involving Hitler, the Duke of Windsor and Mrs Simpson before World War II. Echoes of the Secret Society survive in different guises to this day, including the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) and the Rhodes Scholarships.
In The Secret Society, Robin Brown unpacks this astonishing and largely unknown history. He brings Rhodes, his companions and his successors to life by drawing from diaries and letters, and sheds new light on Rhodes’s homosexuality. Ranging from the diamond mines of Kimberley to the halls of power in Westminster, and peopled with characters such as General Gordon, Leander Starr Jameson, W.T. About the Author
Robin Brown has published 14 books across a range of genres – natural history, biography, fiction and history – mostly with African themes. He also created, produced, directed and wrote Nature Watch, ITV’s most successful natural history series, consisting of 68 programmes, all in the British top 20. He has produced some 50 specials for the BBC, National Geographic and Discovery, including ManEaters of Tsavo (with David Attenborough) and the award-winning In the Company of Whales. His first novel, When the Woods became the Trees, was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, and his book Marco Polo: The Incredible Journey has been sold to five countries and is presently the primer on the subject in Brazilian schools. Robin is an experienced speaker and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, where he lectures regularly on books and films with conservation themes.

History brought to life by a Englishman of statue.

History as written here is exciting because we are intimately linked to people, events and places.
Names of people we have some awareness of, a road or suburb or town associated with them or events we are familiar with and linked to persons we have read about in other contexts, all come together in this history. That C J Rhodes associated with or had contact with writers across the spectrum; books we've read both as youngsters and adults, and the deep influence he had on development here in SA, in places like Kimberley, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Rhodesia, where we have lived or visited or been schooled. I have retired to Modderfontein where the dynamite factory was established for the gold mines, possibly with Rhodes' influence, brings it even closer to my life and memories, along with many millions of other South Africans
