Simply the best microbiology review book

This book is great. It covers everything you need to know for step 1, while leaving out all you dont' need to know. The questions are probably the best micro vignette questions out there, and helps reinforce what you learned from the book.

This book is much better than micro made ridiculously simple in terms of boards review. Its written in outline format so you can get through it much faster, and it includes an immunology section that has all you need to know for the immunology questions on the step.

The only thing I don't like is the Rapid Review format. At times the outline format should be written in complete sentences (like the high-yield series) to avoid confusing statments/facts. For me, this seemed especially true in the immunology section, which can be confusing if you have a weak immuno background.

Other than that, this is a great review book. The only review book for micro in my opinion.

Good content, but not nearly comprehensive

I am a big fan of the Rapid Review series. The Pathology version by Goljan, as far as I'm concerned, is just as essential as First Aid when it comes to reviewing for class and Step 1. However, Microbiology and Immunology are what I would consider two of the most important topics covered on Step 1 along with pathology, pharmacology, and neuroscience. This book has some good review material in it, but is far from comprehensive. Many topics are discussed extremely briefly or omitted entirely. I could only recommend this book for someone who has Microbiology and Immunology down very well and just needs a super quick refresher. To be honest, First Aid does a better job of covering this material.

*** This review is regarding the content of the book only. I do own this book, but I have not accessed the Student Consult online material. Although I have accessed it for the pathology book in this series. From that material I have deduced that it can't make that big of a difference; but I could very easily be wrong.

Review of Microbiology and Immunology

Perfect for medical microbio class. I used Micro Made easy for class, and after reading this book to review for the boards I would definately recommend it over Micro made easy. The organization is better, it's a shorter text, has an outline format, has excellent tables that while are not as detailed as the micro made easy book are a lot easier to read, and it has everything you need to know for class, which micro made easy does not.

Immuno section is a bit brief but it has all the essentials. I would also recommend reading Immunobiology by Janeway and Medical Microbiology by Murray. Both texts are outstanding and really help you appreciate the subjects.

Wonderful Book

The book is beautifully put together, over 200 high quality color reproductions of works. There's a thoughtful essay for each artist represented in the book, and the opening essay by Helen Molesworth is very interesting as well. Definitely a great book for anyone interested in 1980s American art and politics.

Reasonable delivery time and excellent condition

Literally Drew Blood!

I thought when I ordered the books that all this thrash about the packaging MUST be overblown. But this is, without a doubt the worst packaging I've ever dealt with. Though the plastic case was damaged in shipping it was still a struggle to free the books. When pulled apart (which is what a small sticker on one of the books advises) the plastic shattered. One piece dug into the palm of my hand and gave me a pretty decent gash. Other smaller fragments ended up all over my room. All I could think was thank God I didn't lose an eye! Even then I only succeeded in liberating one book.

The books themselves are very nice, and were only slighty damaged in the ludicrous struggle to liberate them from the case. It's comical that they come in the worst designed packaging you can imagine.

So while I would recommend the books, I also strongly suggest protective eye wear for the unboxing.

UPDATE: typos galore! + Alert them to the need for "special packing" of this item

I've already reviewed this book, and made a complaint about its packaging. But now, after having read it cover-to-cover, I was both delighted and dismayed. As a graphic designer, I have an "eagle eye" for design errors and typographical mistakes, but I also can pick out typos easily. I wished an editor had gone through the galleys thoroughly before it went to print. After about fifty mistakes I said to myself, "I should have been flagging these, then sell them to Phaidon for the next printing." I was too lazy, and continued on to find at least another fifty! One page had a paragraph repeat four times (as if the designer was filling a space, waiting for the "expanded" copy to come in to replace it). Shame on you Phaidon for putting so much effort into photography rights, etc. and barely anything into typography and editing.

Original review: One problem with the case and the sheer weight of this product is that it's likely to suffer damage if not carefully packed. While Amazon does have some of the best packing in the industry (especially the shrink-to-a-pallet books that cannot move to potentially damage it's corners), this item in particular was shipped to me using only air bags and a rather thin, large box. The plastic case was severly damaged, but amazingly the books weren't. Customer service was again incredibly accommodating to solving my problem of this damaged item by taking 20% off rather than the hassle of return and replace, which actually would have cost Amazon more. Plus I would have had to carry the nearly 30 lbs to the UPS store!

She was also insightful enough to suggest I make a comment on the product page re my experience so that Amazon's shipping department can take special care shipping this product to avoid it's damage. Maybe use "peanuts" instead, or some other method that ensures the weight doesn't make it jostle under the hostile conditions "handler" use with any package--book or chandelier!

An outstanding design resource which will no doubt soon become a ubiquitous electric-yellow prop on the bookshelves in style magazines, modern furniture catalogs, and lofts of urban trendoids everywhere. It should look nice next to Rem Koolhaas's "S, M, L, XL". All kidding aside, it's well worth the (Amazon) price. Although I must agree with the previous reviewer who pointed out the poorly designed and tacky plastic "carrying case". Ironic that a design encyclopedia would make such a design mistake. Also, I question whether enough time has passed to justify the "design classic" title bestowed upon many of the more recent entries.
