Just Follow the REAL William Banting Diet (for Free)

The REAL Banting Diet (named after William Banging a very successful user of the diet back in the mid 1800s and wrote the booklet "Letters on Corpulence" on his experiences; he was placed on this diet by his most recent physician, Dr. William Harvey who obtained information on this subject from attending lectures in Paris by Claude Bernard. Although this booklet was first printed in 1863, it has remained continuously in print as of 2008 - and free copies, usually via pdf files can be found online).

A reading on Letters of Corpulence reveals that in fact Mr. Banging was instructed to eat FATTY meats, and NOT lean cuts. Also, fruit was extremely minimized - had Dr. Harvey known of the extent that fruit contains fructose - the worst of the sugars - I have no doubt that even that minimal fruit would have been eliminated as his goal was to reduce the consumption of all starches and saccharines (their word then to encompass all sugars). His allowance of very small amount (1 ounce) of "dry toast" is also debatable - but in any case less than the Carbs in the fruit. If you note in the story of Mr. Banting, until he became too obese to do so (before the diet), he was a heavy exerciser (sculling in the River Thames) to no avail.

In any case, a number of these recipes (no matter how delicious looking) would NOT have passed muster with Dr. Harvey (especially if he had today's knowledge on starches and ALL sugar forms) nor that of Mr. Banging who ate simply and did not pursue complicated meal planning and recipes.

Truthfully, I am not sure that the author even knew this information about Mr. Banting as she never mentions him or his situation in her book! I believe that she heard somewhere about the term Banting and it having SOMETHING to do with low carb dieting, so voila, let's write another little Kindle book - if you check her history, she has written on all kinds of cookery... dump dinners (that aren't low carb), vegan cookbooks (that aren't low carb), Ketogenic cookbooks (that are neither keto or low carb), etcetera, etcetera. I simply don't trust such authors.

I read my daughter's copy (as she is getting big time into LCHF along with her mother and I). I advised her how she could adjust a number of the recipes to make them Banting / LCHF and others just to disregard (or delete the book).

A Short introduction containing a lot...

Starting with a short, precise and interesting history of the subject, Eiran has crammed into a fairly small book, (100pp), a wealth of ideas and information..
This book has clear and concise instructional diagrams as far as tying the knots are concerned... the illustrations are comprehensive and not lacking in inspiration... the book as a whole is a sweet introduction to a subject that has huge possibilities.... I would definately recdommend it for first-timers and and as an affectionate look back at the "seventies style" for more advanced practitioners of the art... I have been knotting for about 30 years and am very pleased it's in my library... 'enough said.. :)

unexpected response

I am in the midst of exploring and learning about Traditional Witchcraft. Having read several books now, I sort of expected some similar information. But I got quite an unexpected response while reading this book ie the authors words spoke to a part of me on a very, very deep level. This is not a scholarly, academic book. Nor is it a book about modern Wicca. It is a book written by someone who is in contact with the Old Ones.

The author's paradigm disguised as Tradtional Withcraft.

Coming from Pendraig publishers comes a book that is stream of consiousness writing that delves deeply into British Witchcraft. It is supposedly about the old forest craft practiced by the EuropeaN Witches of old. I read the book through and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Read it through and you will definitly get somthing out of it, something you can use. The book is not without flaws if you could call them that.

The book has no bibliography whatsoever so this is defintely not scholarly material. Does that mean you cannot learn from it? Well of course not. While the author goes on to claim that this is the old forest craft i have found in her pantheon of deities several Egyptian Gods and Godddess. Funny I was not aware that the Europeans ever worshipped Egyptian deities in the forest. Now had the author gone on too state that this was her custom and practice, a tradition she came up with, then I would be cool with that. just call it like it is.

Pendraig Publications, mmmm I have heard some negative things about the whole outfit in genreral. having your book published by Pendraig is not a plus. Yet, there are some authorities on British Witchcraft who are getting their books publihed by Pendraig.I guess it is hard finding someone to publish good books on Witch Craft.

Now bear in mind that while the author has come up with her own paradigm there is stuff you can use. There is a good discussion on Witch blood and the origin of witches. She also gives a good discussion on invoking deities andd some of the rules of British witch craft. After all her whole thing is primarily baased on British witch craft. I found the formula for invokinng deities to be rather useful if you are willing to take things apart and use what is useful. Britsih witchcraft is a witch craft that is meant to be practiced with a magical partner. many of us do not have magical partners so the invokations may have to be modified.

Here is some stuff that others have found useful. THe talk of Witches Mountain where the witches dance and feast it is the center of all things yet the form that it it will take depends on what you bring to it, expect from it and what you want to see. Individual perception is everything and it differs from person to person. While you are in Benevento, Blockula ( names for witches mountain) the deities, fae and witches will be playing games which efffect this world and all other worlds. THe game creates a pattern which enable the witch to access the divine.

The author speaks about identity as well. It is stated that if you lose your identity, your true name then you risk becoming non existent. It is important to know who we are een from a psychological standpoint or we can disappear right beffore our own eyes. The withces identity is hidden they have hidden so well that they in effect have dissappeared. Their DNA is mixed with ours yet i order to do magic we have to remember so we can awaken the blood.

The withces main power is pure altruistic love. THe witches came down to help humanity. THe covens are meant to help societies reconnect to the land and nourish it and in turn be nurished by it.

I read this book on Amazon kindle for only $5.00. For a price like that you really cannot go wrong. if you are looking for books on British witch craft I mean authentic Traditional British Witchcrafft there are better books out there. For further reading one should refer to Capall Bann Publishers they have very authentic book. Of course to really learn Traditiona; Britsih witch craft one needs to join a coven or find a legit teacher. Remember in this book you are getting someone else's paradigm.

She convinced me

In the first few pages I too thought that maybe she made this up just to write a book but I soon changed my mind. As I got further into it I was convinced it was honest. One reason why was that the information was "channeled" or "recaptured" by a coven not Ms. Cummer alone. Another reason was the Basque connection (see The Roots of Witchcraft by Michael Harrison). I don't see a lot of modern Wicca in it as another reviewer did. I have always believed in the European Gods (support your local Gods). The kicker came near the end with the following quote "...the pain of living within the bounds of a desert-born religion which was never really ours to begin with nor ever really could be entirely, because it's symbols were not born where we were born, anymore than it's Gods were."
Nice job.

Love the book, not the "ebook"

I purchased the hardcopy of this book a year ago and enjoy using it as a resource for the class I teach. However, I wish I had read the one review about this Kindle edition. They were correct, you cannot enlarge or highlight the text. If you have a 7 inch tablet or smart phone, you can forget trying to read the text. This ebook will not even open on the Kindle desktop app so that I can put it on a larger screen. I gave it two stars mainly because I do like the book itself, but the inability to read this as true ebook is a huge frustration.

I too would like to get a refund for this purchase. Is that possible?

A book that is NEEDED in this often thoughtless world.

In this book we have a compilation of almost all "famous" and relevant philosophers in history, and of the contemporary world. This book does exactly what the title says: it explains big ideas in a simple manner. There will always be objections that ideas have been simplified as would be the case with Heidegger, Hegel and even Bertrand Russell (how would you, after all, know what to say about a person who has published over 30,000 articles?) , however I am of the opinion that it is always better to start from the bottom up in order to understand and grasp complex ideas. In any case, much of the subjects discussed in this book would eventually have to be communicated in a jargon free way if philosophy is ever going to expand to a wider public and not left alone in the "ivory tower" it often is accused of. Philosophy is one of the things we ALL do, regardless of religion, race or background ,after all, any time we enter in a discussion we are using our thoughts to make our point.

This book does the amazing job in that it is able to go through the very first philosophical statement made by Thales of Miletus "Everything is Made of Water" to Voltaire's shocking conclusion that "Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd" entering into the nearly non-sensical yet still interesting comment made by Roland Barthes that for a lover "Language is a skin", this book touches on all possible points of view on life, morality, certainty, phenomenology and all other subjects that philosophy is concerned with.

Sure, I would complain that sections like that of Noam Chomsky do no justice to his enormous amount of work and thought, or that the conclusion of Michel Foucault's statement that "Man is an invention of a recent date" miss his much larger concerns of power relations. Other interesting philosophers only get a brief paragraph in the end: people with such amazing thought like Friedrich Schelling, Ayn Rand, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Gilles Deleuze. However there can be no perfect book on this subject, we all are forced to choose what we think is the best thought of many people, while in reality we may be only scratching the surface or missing the point. But this is philosophy, and this is how I like it.

Give this book as a gift to a friend, or a family member or any person you may know who now suffers from "phone addiction", and let us all think and then proceed to make this often thoughtless world somewhat more colorful.

The research and the huge amount of informative writing in this latest George Megalogenis book is presented in such an easily readable sale that you never feel - when will this end - I finished this book wanting more in fact. It has given me an insight into the very beginnings of 'European Settlement' (some would say 'invasion') and the varied ways in which each of the present States and Territories were settled by the constant arrivals of immigrants - not only from England and Ireland either. I had no idea of the mix of migrants that has come to make up what it is to be an 'Australian' today. Megalogenis makes a strong case for the benefits to Australia for ongoing migration as the way to develop a better and more prosperous country at a time when Australia is facing many challenges.

Nice idea for a topic, but I was disappointed that there was little economic data to back up the claims regarding how well or not Australia was going in this or that decade. If you take that away it's just politics, and Australia is very boring during its early colonized history.

George Megalogenis’s “Australia’s Second Chance” is a fascinating and insightful read. The author is a curious onlooker to the behaviour of the Australian economy and character. He is perceptive and produces a well structured argument.

“Australia’s Second Chance” is firstly a history of Australia from the time of the dispossession of the indigenous population to the present day. In so doing, Megalogenis divides the nation’s history into three self-explanatory sectors:

1.The Rise

2. The Fall

3. The Return.

From 1788 until the depression of the 1890s, Australia positioned itself to be open to the world in terms of ideas and people. Accordingly, it became the richest country on earth in terms of GDP per capita. However, following the 1890s depression, the country turned back in on itself. Australia excluded many immigrants and built a vast tariff wall to protect its industries. Inevitably, it slipped down the wealth totem pole. Australia’s return came with the end of World War II as it actively sought immigrants. This process has continued to the present day and has been complemented by the virtual removal of all import barriers. Once again, the country has soared up the wealth ladder.

I am providing here a brief synopsis of the Megalogenis argument. Of course, the book provides a host of data to support the contention that openness induces wealth. The one statistic that I enjoyed was that 28% of Australia’s population was born overseas. This rises to 39% in Sydney. By way of comparison, in the United States, always viewed as an immigration magnet, the comparable figure is only 13%. Australia has drawn a huge swathe of migrants while remaining a tolerant and prosperous society. There is much to be commended here.

Even to those backward looking people who believe in a little Australia, the book offers a thoughtful challenge. Highly recommended.

Gut-wrenchingly emotional love story,�By�Must Love Romantic Suspense�I just read TEXAS WIDE OPEN by KC Klein. I am still wiping tears off my cheeks. This is the BEST BOOK I have read this year... I found myself marveling at KC's brilliance. The way she wove in what happened and juxtaposed it against current day was exactly the way this story should have been told. It was an incredibly clever way to keep building tension by revealing bits and pieces of back story. This story is gut-wrenchingly emotional. If you don't cry at least once, something is wrong with you. My only complaint is that I didn't want it to end!

KC Klein's Texas Wide Open is a passionate second chance at love story. Katie Harris has been love with neighbor Cole Logan for the majority of her young life. With an eight year age difference between them, Katie has been impatiently waiting for Cole to see her as the sexy young woman she has become. With time running out before she heads off to college, Katie takes matters into her own hands and attempts to seduce Cole. Brokenhearted by his rejection, Katie leaves her beloved horses, ranch and love for Cole behind to attend college.

Katie Harris is a strong-willed young woman who knows her own mind. She is also impatient, immature and impulsive. Her feelings for Cole have remained steadfast over the years, and she is tireless in her efforts to attract his attention. With her dad pushing her to attend college out of state, Katie is determined to take their friendship to the next level and when subtlety and jealousy do not capture Cole's attention, she wages an all out seduction in an effort to win Cole's heart.

The deaths of both his parents forced Cole to grow up way too fast. Raising his sister Nikki and trying to keep the family ranch has left him exhausted both emotionally and financially. Cole is close to Katie's father and their lives are closely intertwined.

Texas Wide Open is told through multiple points of view which helps give readers valuable insight into the different characters' thoughts, emotions and motivations. While I appreciate getting inside all of the characters' heads, several of the shifts in perspective are quite abrupt and pulled me out of the story.

Texas Wide Open frequently flashes back to the pivotal events surrounding Katie's senior year of high school and the events leading up to her leaving for college. Some of the transitions from past to present were not always clear which made the story a little confusing at times.

Much of the plot concentrates on Cole and Katie's past relationship which does not leave much time to develop their current one. In the present, their relationship is on again/off again so frequently that I had a hard time keeping up with whether they were together or not. Lack of communication between them is frustrating and contributes to a lot of their problems.

An additional story arc between Cole's sister Nikki and his best friend Jett provides added interest to the storyline. With more than her fair share of emotional baggage, Nikki's life is currently a mess. When her latest round of trouble lands her in jail, it is Jett to the rescue. Their storyline is unresolved and I hope that Ms. Klein plans to revisit them in the future.

Texas Wide Open is a fast-paced story that is full of drama, lust and unrequited love. With past events interspersed with current ones, KC Klein guides her readers through the various ups and downs of Katie and Cole's volatile relationship. Their road to happily ever after is long and sometimes emotionally exhausting but it is well worth the wait.

Gut-wrenchingly emotional love story

I just read TEXAS WIDE OPEN by KC Klein. I am still wiping tears off my cheeks. This is the BEST BOOK I have read this year. NO question. I'm a romantic suspense author and my tastes run toward, well, romantic suspense obviously, and paranormals. But KC is a friend so I figured I would read this contemporary romance to be nice. I'm so glad I did. Honestly, I had reservations - because it's not a genre I typically enjoy. And, it skips back and forth in time, showing what happened in the past then what's happening in the present. I thought it would be a chore reading back and forth in time. Instead, I found myself marveling at KC's brilliance. The way she wove in what happened and juxtaposed it against current day was exactly the way this story should have been told. It was an incredibly clever way to keep building tension by revealing bits and pieces of backstory. I loved the hero and heroine and the secondary love story was wonderful as well. This story is gut-wrenchingly emotional. If you don't cry at least once, something is wrong with you. Seriously. I absolutely loved it. And I do have to add a plug for how she handled the setting. I know nothing about Texas and very little about horses. KC wove such unique, interesting elements of both into the story that I really felt like I was there, in Texas, on a horse ranch. I highly recommend this book. It's just an absolutely wonderful love story. My only complaint is that I didn't want it to end!

Girl falls back in love with the boy next door.

Girl grows up with the older boy next door. Girl falls madly in love with the older boy next door, and even at the age of eight knows that one day, she's going to marry that boy. (Cue famous Trisha Yearwood song) Girl grows up, and boy next door breaks her heart at the age of eighteen, so girl leaves her small hometown in Texas to go to college in New York.

In New York she meets a new boy who is sweet, and after a couple of years tells her he loves her, and wants to marry her. So girl gives up on hometown heartbreak from the boy next door and moves on. Right?

Wrong. Nope. No ma'am, not right. Our heroine Katie gets a phone call from the heartbreak kid, otherwise known as Cole, when he tells her that her Dad had a heart attack and she needs to come home to Texas. Cole sees Katie's father as surrogate father since the day Cole's Dad died when he was sixteen and had to become the man of his house. So needless to say, he's there Mr. Harris as he's recovering from the heart attack. It's hard on his own heart though, to have the only girl he ever wanted as his own back home and still mad enough at him to spit nails. Or take a baseball bat to his truck. If she only knew the truth why he had to do what he did a few years ago, maybe she could forgive him and then they could get on with their lives together. Or at least that's what he thought till he saw the engagement ring on Katie's finger.

I liked this story. It was angsty and emotional and had a total Carrie Underwood moment that I've wanted to try myself a few times in life. It's also laid an excellent plot line for a sequel involving Cole's sister and his best friend Jet that I can't wait to read! Brave Ms. Klein for a great book and it's a solid four wine glass toast to Texas Wide Open! (On a side note - am I the only one who thinks those red boots on the front cover kick ass?)

I'm kind of in shock

As someone going through illness and chemotherapy myself, the author's description and innate understanding of the desperation I feel completely gripped me. There were moments where I had to sit back and just absorb it all in, I could envision myself in the lead character's position so completely.

The story itself is wonderful - it kept me riveted and looking forward to my morning commutes where I could pick up my Kindle and read more, even to the point of being 'that' person on the escalator, obliviously absorbed in a book and knocking other commuters nearly off the platform (erm, sorry!).

Add that to the jaw drop of a last line in the book and this is sure to be one that I will always, always remember.

Touching thriller that raises many profound questions.

This book is a medical thriller and the story is very engaging and interesting. It is about Erica, a young woman diagnosed with an advanced stage of pancreatic cancer. She is surprised to find her closest friend in her secretary whom she never truly appreciated before. This woman gives Erica some tips on alternative medicine. Erica’s last hope becomes a famous healer, but her journey is more complicated than it seems at first sight. The healer does not practice anymore. In addition, he commands complete surrender from his patients -- both emotionally and financially. While his fees may seem outrageous, he lives frugally and supports orphans in Africa. He is a typical guru with a huge ego, but he is also surprisingly humble at some moments. Nothing is as it may seem.

It is difficult to say more without giving spoilers, so let me just mention some themes instead of saying what exactly will happen. There is a conflict between alternative medicine and pharmaceutical industry. There is also a conflict between science and hope. While the patient is going through a dramatic transformation, so is her healer. He demonstrates a classical utilitarian conflict between his personal calling and a chance to do a greater good for a greater number by abandoning his mission and his unique gift. While the woman agrees to face her inner demons, this does not mean that she must win. Her healer seems to be at peace with himself and the world, but there seems to be a dark side to him as well. We learn some haunting secrets about his past, as the story unfolds. His future turns out to be equally surprising.

This is the first book by Christopher Fischer that I have read and I am truly impressed. It is much more than just a thrilling story. I will definitely read more books from this author.

I took a punt on a new author to me and I was delighted that I did. This a book has an original plot that at the same time makes you feel like you already know the chief protagonists. From the opening page you are immersed into the story and what a story. I like to be drawn into a book but I need to be kept interested and I most certainly was.

No chance of spoilers from me, I would ruin the book for you if I did. All I will say is that the story centres around Erika, who choses to seek alternative treatment for her cancer. The alternative treatment she seeks and the deceit, plot twists and intrigue that follows, just mount up. I wanted to put the book away several times but kept going back for just one more chapter. You will love the flow of this book. Perfectly paced for me, a well balanced study in character I have become a Christoph Fischer fan today. If you are the sort of person who is afraid to take a risk with a new author, you need not worry, you are in safe hands. Pick this book up and look for his next one.
