Well written law book

Just finished a Master's in Education Administration and Educational Law was my last class. This was the textbook for it. I'd love to give it one star for being way too expensive - it is, but I can't fault the content. It made a fairly dry topic at least readable. I felt it delivered the knowledge appropriately to the audience - I'm a teacher not a lawyer - and in a way that left me feeling as though I had actually gained something from the class. It is still too expensive, but that isn't the fault of the book. If you buy it, I feel for your bank account, but I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Thanks for taking the time to read my review.

Very good. Once I got past trying to remember every name and connection, which was frustrating me to no end, I was totally wrapped up in the story. I liked all the characters, and was happy to see Loki learning to cooperate with the mortals without having an attitude. Guess I need to find the continuation of the story. :)

A Fascinating Work

If you have ever wondered about the early history of the United States and how the all but forgotten town of Natchez, Mississippi came to be, then you will be delighted with this fine work by Jonathan Daniels. Originally founded by the Natchez Indians, this starting point of what came to be called the Natchez Trace, initiated a roadway that stretched 450 miles northeast to today's Nashville, Tennessee. Thought to be descendants of the Aztecs, the first Europeans the Natchez came into contact with were Hernando de Soto's expedition in the 1550's. A thriving metropolis at the time of Soto, Spain annihilated the Natchez people in war and the area subsequently reverted to a natural state.

As France, Spain and England traded claims to the area at the end of the French and Indian War, England established a post on the spot in 1763 and populated it with discharged soldiers by offering land concessions. With the regeneration of the town, the pathway itself was regenerated. For the next 50 or so years whites would increasingly utilize this buffalo path, enlarging and extending it, as a route for commerce, immigration and defense.

As first English colonists and then American frontiersmen crossed the Appalachian Mountains to settle Kentucky, Tennessee and the Ohio Valley, the natural river system's southern flow to New Orleans was the only way for this area's agricultural, forest and manufactured products to move to market. Until the invention of the steamboat, the Trace was a primary thoroughfare for river men, pioneers, armies and traders to return to Kentucky and Tennessee. To give an idea of the volume of travelers, once invented over 700 steamboats would make the homeward trek unnecessary. Volume on the Trace was huge!

In the earliest stages of its commercial development, it passed through ancestral homelands of the Choctaw and Chickasaw tribes and was viewed by almost all travelers as true wilderness road. But over time as whites settled the region (by 1800 over 1 million Americans lived west of the Appalachian Mountains) the native population was increasingly squeezed until agricultural interests ultimately pushed Native Americans across the Mississippi River in the 1830s. Thanks to the Trace itself, so rapid was the growth of Natchez proper that in its heyday it contained more millionaires than any other spot in the United States.

The Devil's Backbone is the story of one of America's earliest wilderness thoroughfares. It is a story Jonathan Daniels tells well. It encompasses early French and Spanish exploration, the French and Indian war, the American Revolution, the War of 1812 and the Trail of Tears. Notables using the Trace include Soto, Carondelet, Tecumseh, Andrew Jackson, Aaron Burr and Meriwether Lewis. It provides an excellent slice of our early western history when our west was still east of the Mississippi River. Indians, soldiers, mail carriers, land speculators, slaves heading south for sale, vigilantes, pirates, travelers and quite blood thirsty outlaw bands all generated a story of amazing mystery and competing interests.

As noted by other reviewers, there is no bibliography but this deficiency is more than made up for by direct source references quoted in the text. Exceedingly well written, clear and concise, there is an amazing amount of very good history here told with an eye to significant analysis and detail.

For anyone who likes Southern history, particulary history of the Natchez Trace, this book is a must. The book is full of information about the use and /or settling of the land around the Natchez Trace. The book, however, is often hard to follow since it contains so much information and various names of settlers and infamous historical figures that used the Trace. Once you begin to read it, you become mesmerized and will find it hard to put down.

Underrated philosopher's brilliant and persuasive analysis

Contemporary philosophers have taken more interest in Thomas Reid, the 18th-century Scottish "common sense" philosopher, but by no means enough. Among his several important books, the "Inquiry" critiques the epistemological foundations of the tradition from Descartes, Locke, and Berkeley to Hume. He persuasively identifies a fundamental flaw in that tradition--namely, the notion that ideas are "impressions" left by sense objects on the mind and therefore in some respect "resemble" their objects. By completely separating the object and the idea, Reid anticipates the possibility that the neurological and mental representation of reality is something completely different from the actual world. His insistence that philosophy cannot explain our sensations but only describe them precisely and attentively and that doing so leads to rigorous insights anticipates Husserl with astonishing prescience. He even explains why such descriptions are hard to come by--the "natural attitude" (Husserl's term) is simply to pass through ideas to objects and is inherently inattentive to the ideas themselves. Most interesting is his amazing reinterpretation of causality in semiotic terms as a process by which one thing "signifies" automatically and irresistibly another to our minds. This far-reaching idea deserves full exploration. Reid came from a family of doctors and scientists, and his lengthy discussion of vision shows his strong bias toward empirical investigation of facts. On the one hand, Reid rejects Hume's skepticism as an entirely airy abstraction by philosophy that the skeptic himself abandons in everyday life (as Hume himself knew well) and on the other he never lapses into the excessive rationalism of Kant, which imposes philosophical structures on empirical facts. There are many passages where Reid conducts a kind of "ordinary language analysis" (often with a very Wittgensteinian flavor) that persuasively critiques extreme views in the tradition he rejects because of its inevitable skepticism. Reid has very accurately diagnosed the fundamental failures of the Cartesian-Lockeian tradition and offered a persuasive alternative in a way that recalls the displacement of a desiccated neo-Kantianism by phenomenology. This is a book no one interested not just in the history of philosophy but in fundamental philosophical questions should miss.

Every teen needs this!

My thirteen-year-old daughter was having some bad attitude problems. She was very ungrateful, and most the things that came out of her mouth were angry. So when I finally had enough I decided to come up with a different kind of punishment. I would teach her different habits and force her if needed to remember all the reason she has to be grateful. When I came across this book I was thrilled. A Christian book on her level with inspiring stories. It was exactly what I needed. She read some of these stories alone, but every night we read a few together. Most of the stories are very short, I think some of the longest were about 7 pages, but usually they were two or three. We laughed, we cried, we bonded, we learned lots of things and saw things for many different points of view. Very great uplifting book about how God can turn anything around. And how you can always turn to him no matter how dark things look. I recommend this book to everyone!!!!

Truly, a book of Miracles!

If you are down, or have health issues, family problems, or any other situation of that nature, this book will lift and inspire you. While it won't eradicate all troubles, it demonstrates how individuals through prayer and divine intervention saw the light and had a profound effect in their lives.

While some of the "Chicken Soup" books I didn't care for; this one is exceptional. It is a must read for a dose of good old fashioned faith!

I found this book to be very comforting as I went through my grief of losing my husband unexpectedly . Reading the stories of other people who have lost loved ones and have found a new life and hope encouraged me that my life would go on and that I could obtain happiness in spite of my grief.
