In this elegant, old-fashioned rambler, a sequel to the historical fantasy Sorcery and Cecilia, a party of five Brits (three of them are wizards)--Kate and Thomas Schofield, Cecy and James Tarleton, and Lady Sylvia--takes a "grand tour" of 19th-century Europe. What promises to be a pleasant exploration of old world antiquities and fancy shops turns out to be an adventure of a lifetime when Cecy receives a mysterious alabaster flask (a coronation treasure) from an agitated Lady in Blue. Before they know it, they are wrapped up in a magical conspiracy to take over Europe.

Written in two voices by two different authors, the novel alternates between Cecy's deposition and excerpts from her dear friend and cousin Kate's diary. Despite the crisp, clever dialogue and wonderful character subtleties in this Jane Austen-style comedy of manners, readers may be confused by the episodic nature of the novel whose mysteries take their sweet time in unfolding. With continued echoes of Jane Austen, the marvelous mixture of fantasy and Regency romance easily captures readers' interest. The alternating voices of Cecy, in her deposition to the Joint Representatives of the British Ministry of Magic, and of Kate, in her commonplace book, tell of married life, attempted robberies, murder, magic spells that work (and a few that backfire), and the search for the reason for a series of mysterious thefts of arcane historical artifacts that are linked to magic and a king's coronation. On their tour, the newlyweds take their place in European society, meeting well-known historical figures such as Beau Brummell and various noblemen and magicians. The plot moves at a sedate but steady pace befitting the period, and the characters shine as they struggle with their magical legacy and grand adventure, while they try to prevent the coronation of a new Napoleon. Things turn mysterious rather quickly, with collapsing ceilings, attempted robberies, and the delivery of a very odd package, and the honeymoon soon evolves into a dangerous adventure in pursuit of some evil wizards intent on creating a powerful new empire. Told in alternating diary entries (Wrede writes as Cecelia and Stevermer as Kate), the novel has the feel of Jane Austen meeting Harry Potter. Cecelia is strong and self-sufficient, much like Wrede's princess in the Enchanted Forest Chronicles; Kate is prone to clumsiness and a bit insecure, but her cleverness and devotion to her husband make her seem like the heroine of a Regency romance. The vocabulary and writing style may pose some difficulties for younger readers, but those who persevere will be rewarded with a satisfying blend of magic, mystery, adventure, humor, and romance. Not as Good as the First Book

I didn't like this one nearly as much as the first one. For one thing, it's a LOT longer, so it seems like it rambles through the plot until things start happening. For another, I kept getting the characters confused. There are a lot of secondary characters, true, but I mean I got the *main* characters confused. It's told in two points of view, and I had a hard time remembering which of the girls I was currently reading. In the first book, this didn't happen often because they are in different locations writing letters back and forth, but in this book, they're in the same location and often are remarking on the same events. So, I was often flipping back a few pages to try to remember which point of view I was currently in.

A Magical Tour of Europe in 1817

Kate and Cecy, the cousins who are the main characters of "The Enchanted Chocolate Pot", have had their double wedding with Thomas and James and are now embarking on a joint "wedding journey", which would be a "Grand Tour" if it were taken only by young men. The first lap is taken in the company of Lady Sylvia, Thomas' mother, who lives in Paris. This may sound dull, but not when undertaken by these two and their husbands (not to mention in-laws and assorted acquaintances and servants.) Ancient mysterious magical artifacts keep turning up, as do a pleasant (but somewhat dim) young gentleman and his far from pleasant tutor, a mysterious but far from ancient young woman and references to the recently defeated Napoleon. They pursue the mystery from Calais to Paris, across the Alps to Milan and Venice, across the Appenines to Rome and ultimately to an ancient grove and a magical conclusion.

The story is again told antiphonally by the two cousins, in this case through entries in Kate's "Commonplace Book" (ie, journal) and Cecy's deposition to the "Joint Representatives of the British Ministry of Magic, the War Office and the Foreign Office". The distinguished bureaucrats may not have required the full deposition and commonplace book, but the modern reader will be entranced.

Book 2 A Honeymoon?

Well our two newly married couples are on their way to Europe for their honeymoons. Things do not work out as expected but the trip makes for a great cover as they travel for Wellington to find the stolen regalia and stop a potential Emperor from taking over. Murder, theft, abductions, and a lot of magic go down as Kate and Cecelia attempt to spend some time with their new husbands. Lots of fun and action. On to book 3, Ten Years Later.

About the Author

Jonathan Fineberg is Gutgsell Professor of Art History at the University of Illinois and a trustee of The Phillips Collection in Washington. He earned his B.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University, an M.A. from the Courtauld Institute in London, and studied psychoanalysis at the Boston and Western New England Institutes. He has taught at Yale, Harvard, and Columbia universities and among his awards are: the Pulitzer Fellowship in Critical Writing, the NEA Art Critic's Fellowship, and the College Art Association’s

Award for Distinguished Teaching in the History of Art. His other books include: Christo and Jeanne-Claude: On the Way to the Gates (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2004), The Innocent Eye: Children's Art and the Modern Artist (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1997), Imagining America: Icons of 20th Century American Art (with John Carlin; New Haven: Yale University Press, 2005; also a two-hour television special on PBS), and When We Were Young: New Perspectives on the Art of the Child (Berkeley: University of California Press, 2006).

VALUE THE GIFT

A few days before Christmas nine-year-old Marcel and his family are driving to their new house--an old farm deep in the snowy woods, then get lost. Luckily they find an old hotel which at first seemed to be closed. Marcel is fascinated by their quaint but kindly host, Pappy, who promises to provide them with directions to their destination the next day.
But the man mysteriously disappears, leaving them only an unsigned, unaddressed Christmas card, which has no words--just a curious sketch of the woods. Marcel gradually realizes that this card is a kind of map to their new home, yet it is much more than that. It is a Magic card, which changes to reflect conditions of the real world outside--of time, light and location.
Still Marcel experiences alternating fear and peace in the days preceding the Christian holiday, as a result of the card's shifting hints. The family of four is confused by the mysterious fire glowing in the old cabin; did they just stumble upon a meeting and inadvertantly drive the people away? Secular and sacred connotations combine to make a fascinating, enjoy-in-one-sitting read. Will Marcel ever see his beloved Pappy again--just who and what is he anyway? A literary chiaroscuro where the Light combats the Darkness and a young boy tries to choose the right path and make the best "trade."

My introduction to Paul Theroux

Many years ago on a trip to England I found the Penguin / Puffin version of A Christmas Card in a bookstore and bought it for my children, who were living in Denmark and visiting their grandparents in Maine every other summer. They don't seem to remember the story, but I read it to classes every year at Christmas as a high school English teacher in Denmark and my students loved it as much as I did after they got over the fact that Teacher was reading to them, just like in grade school.

It was my introduction to the wonderful world of Paul Theroux. I've since read many (but not all) of his books. I didn't enjoy the more recent novels, but I particularly loved A Kingdom By The Sea, as I, too, have enjoyed walking in England.

This is a magical story - about magic and imagination and light and life, which is what Theroux always writes about. Get a copy for your children or grandchildren, but be sure to read it out loud to them, one chapter a day, to spread out the suspense!

Wonderfully descriptive, riveting, and enchanted storytelling

I remember reading this book decades ago around the age of 10. We cleaned out the garage this past summer and found a box of my old books. This one caught my eye and I put it aside, wanting to share it with my 5 y.o. this Christmas, which I am. We have been reading 2 chapters a night before bed, then discussing what we have read. I have a very bright child and he caught on quickly to the magic of the card, he made the connection of the card being light in the day and dark at night. We are down to the last 2 chapters and he is trying to guess the magic of the story, I almost hate for it to end. The book, and the season, has bonded us closer together. It is books like these that unite the old and the young, as although us older ones may have already read it as a child, it is like reliving it all over again through the eyes of your child. An absolutely amazing book that teaches us the magic and wonder of the Christmas holiday.
