About the Author
Barbara Walker first visited Bali in 1988 intending to stay for only a few days. She never expected to be so completely taken by the Balinese people, the spirituality of their lives and the overwhelming beauty of their lush and verdant landscape. And now, after 17 years, her admiration for the Balinese people and enthusiasm for the island continues to grow. Barbara is an experienced architectural-interior designer and colour stylist and is also the author of the bestselling Bali Style, first published in 1995 and now into its seventh reprint. She is currently working on a series of books on Indochine architecture, interiors and food.

Jay Graham photographs for commercial and editorial clients in the US and internationally. Among his most recent books is Bouquets, written by Marsha Heckman. His photographs will again be seen in an upcoming series of books on Indochine style, architecture and food. Jay Graham lives in northern California with his wife and three children and loves to travel the world, whether for pleasure or on assignment. His connection to Bali is long-standing one, and one he hopes will continue always.

Must read for advanced novice and above

"Galen Rowell's Inner Game of Outdoor Photography" is a collection of articles written for Outdoor Photographer magazine organized into four broad categories. Interspersed between the articles are sections of photographs. Each article is cross-listed with relevant photographs, and vice-verse. This cross listing is an effective device; coming back to various photographs as I read the essays forced me to really think about them.
The first section deals with "creative and cognitive processes." These range from the inner desire needed to go out and get that shot to an almost scholarly examination - complete with annotated bibliography - of the processes involved in human sight and the differences between what people see and what film records. I found this section to be the strongest aspect of the book as well as the most useful and interesting.
The second section consists mainly of technical material ranging from how to pack your gear to ways to use flash in outdoor settings. It is pitched at a higher level than an introductory photo guide, suitable for an advanced novice like myself.
The third section is primarily a collection of travel stories, often only tangentially touching on photography. However, these articles provide the context in which many of the photographs in the book were taken. Arguably, context is the crux of photography. As Rowell points out, photographs are used to tell a story - though maybe not the one intended by the photographer.
The last section conveys Rowell's view on the positive and negative effects that photography and outdoor travel have on the natural environment, as well as on the art of color outdoor photography vis-�-vis fine art photography. These essays are thought provoking and, like the rest of the book, very well written.
I had feared from the title that I was in for a bunch of pseudo-spiritual babble, but instead I found a fairly deep, if meandering, discussion of the spectrum of what outdoor photography involves.

Not much of a "game", mostly "travel log"

I read some of the reviews about this book present on this site and was somewhat surprised to see mostly positive ones. Maybe it is just my perception or the expectation I had after reading these reviews but before buying the book that lead to my disappointment in the book. What were my expectations...? I did expect Galen to tell me what he thinks and feels before, during, and after taking those great pictures. I did NOT expect a HOW-TO book (which it is definitely not). I expected a book about artistic approach to the outdoor photography. What I found instead was mostly a travel log. The first 2 chapters were as close to my expectation as it ever got. The author talked some about his creative approach and very little about his technical one. The rest of the book doesn't even present his "photographic philosophy". He simply talks about his travels, places he visited, people he met. All that would be great for an illustrated travel book but not for a book that was supposed to tell me about how HE came to those pictures, what (in his opinion) made those pictures great or standing out (there is some of it but so little it almost doesn't exist). The book's title has "inner game" words in it. I wanted to know what that "inner" game was before, during, and after taking EACH picture (or at least most of them). Overall - disappointing and expensive for that.

The "Inner Passion" of Galen Rowell

If you're a serious photographer (amateur or pro) and find your interest in shooting lagging occasionally, Rowell's enthusiasm might be contagiousness enough to provide a cure. This man was passionate about photography and went to extraordinary ends to get the shots he visualized. The majority of the book deals with his philosophy of photography and how he accomplished what he did. There's also much excellent technical advice. The book's only shortcoming, from my very personal perspective (take it for what it's worth), is the undercurrent of Rowell's ample ego. Were the personal pronoun "I" deleted from the book, its page count would be reduced considerably. Nonetheless, I still strongly recommend "Inner Game" for the highly passionate and very personal account that it is - an extraordinary photographer's testimonial to a life totally devoted to the art of photography and love of nature. It makes you want to climb a mountain and take pictures!

I have been set free

I bought this at Jeff's meeting when he came to my state. I bought his package and this book was in it.
Wow, I didn't know I was a procrastinator and how it messes up your life. I actually feel like a new
person. Like the blinders were taken off and now I see. I actually feel different emotions, accomplished
like I have not before. There is a new empowerment that will give you strength so you can take the next
step towards success. I can't say enough about it.

I'd like to add that Jeff's other book on procrastination is like part 2, called "FROM PROCRASTINATION TO PRODUCTION 7 STEPS TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE NOW"
A must read after this one.

This book presents the mathematical theory of finite elements, starting from basic results on approximation theory and finite element interpolation and building up to more recent research topics, such as and Discontinuous Galerkin, subgrid viscosity�stabilization, and a posteriori error estimation.

The�body of the text is organized into three parts plus two appendices collecting the functional analysis� results used in the book. The first part develops the theoretical basis for the finite element method and emphasizes the fundamental role of inf-sup conditions. The second party�addresses various applications encompassing elliptic PDE's, mixed formulations, first-order PDEs, and the time-dependent versions of these problems. The third part covers implementation issues and should provide readers with� most of� the practical details needed to write or understand a finite element code.

Written at the graduate level, the text contains numerous examples and exercises and is intended to serve as a graduate textbook. Depending on one's interests, several reading paths can be followed, emphasizing either theoretical results, numerical algorithms, code efficiency, or applications in the engineering sciences.

How has the German image of the Nazi past changed since the reunification of East and West Germany? And what role have cinema and television played in this process? Stimulating and accessible, combining close readings with broad contextualization, this monograph shows how profoundly cinema and television have transformed collective remembrance of the Third Reich. The first publication on the topic to embrace the two decades since 1990, it provides a comprehensive account of cinema and television productions, presenting case studies of national film events such as Stalingrad (1993) and Downfall (2004), and assessing the influence of international blockbusters from Schindler's List/ (1993) to The Reader (2008). Targeted at a wide readership, the book will be a central reference point for university teachers offering courses on German film or cultural memory, will give guidance to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, and will make a lasting impact on research in the field of German screen cultures. Axel Bangert holds a doctorate from the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages, University of Cambridge. The Nazi Past gets Personal

In The Nazi Past in Contemporary German Film, Axel Bangert examines the change in how the Nazi period is portrayed since reunification. This change seems to be reflected in both a more personal style as well as a shift from a dominant tone of guilt to one of shame. The book covers both television and film productions and both documentary and fictional portrayals.

One aspect which seems to bother some people about such portrayals is that there is less of a distinctive line drawn which makes it more difficult to simply point and proclaim evil. While that may well be understandable for some to find problematic it also presents the period in a more realistic light. To draw a parallel which I acknowledge can only go so far, American Civil War films used to draw simplistic lines of right and wrong (even to the extreme of glorifying the side which had by far the worse human rights record in Griffith's Birth of a Nation) then started portraying the human side. It was the sense of many southerners who had little or nothing to do directly with slavery that their "way of life" was being infringed upon and thus were pulled into a war of which they had almost no political interest. The suffering their families suffered even while supporting the Confederacy allowed the human side of the "evil" foe to give a more holistic view. Certainly the parallel can only go so far, it was a different kind of genocide and carried out at a different pace. But the personalization of the stories being told allowed some degree of healing to begin. In other words, the German cinema does not need to keep beating themselves up just to make the rest of the world feel like Germany is still paying a price, but rather they can find a way to tell the smaller stories, many of which fall into that grey area of evil vs good, in order to help a reunified country heal and move on.

This book is a wonderful addition to either an academic or a popular library where there is an interest in film studies. It is a descriptive book primarily, not prescriptive, so to expect something that presumes to take the past to task for not addressing what is not covered by contemporary German film is not reading the book on its terms. After reading this, one could easily find avenues for further study in any number of areas from film studies to cultural studies and sociological applications as well.
