Concise but useful information

This book delivers the most perfect roadmap to an ITIL lite implementation. Exactly what I was looking for. For smaller companies that don't have budget (or need) for a full ITIL implementation, this is it. Worth every penny.

Does the trick for a small org

There are some ITSM professionals I've heard who damn this book because it speaks of "implementing ITIL" and does not address the "value proposition"

True, BUT I'd like to say I thought this book was great!

Why? Because there are so many smaller organisations who need process too. They don't have the time/money to do the heavy analysis of which process when and what's my maturity. These organisations have a gut feel for what they need, understand there's an inevitable support cost and won't spend money measuring that they "know" already. They have agreed ITIL is best practice, so they need some of that.

This isn't high and mighty and doesn't measure value to the business or assess maturity but for a reactive IT in a small organisation I can see the applicability plus I recommend it.

Good high level information

If you have a base knowledge of ITIL and are looking for a "light" implementation of ITIL, this is the book. It has a good amount of detail in it without being overwhelming. This is a starting point for my company so it is the perfect first step. I have knowledge of ITIL v2 and this book outlines the changes with v3; I found this very helpful.

How Baking Works

This book is as it is discribed. I thought it would give more explaination of why certain things happen when baking. For example if you use cold ingredients like eggs in baking, your cake may bake with a dome in the middle. I didn't find any explainations such as this, only differences between ingredients such as AP Flour and Cake Flour. But not what would happen if you used one as opposed to the other. I was looking for a book that would help me to understand why certain things happen, like why my cake sometimes rises light and airy as opposed to not rising and being heavy. I guess more the results of the chemisty of baking .

I wrote a 17 page term paper during culinary school in one night with only this book! This book opened my eyes to the incredible chemistry behind baking. If you want to understand why things react the way they do in this medium, I strongly suggest this book!

Guide to the factors that shape organizational design

Jay R. Galbraith is an internationally recognized expert on organization design. He is a Senior Research Scientist at the Center for Effective Organizations at the University of Southern California and Professor Emeritus at the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Lausanne, Switzerland. This book is a updated/revised edition of 'Designing Organizations' which was originally published in 1995. It is split up into 10 chapters.
Chapter 1 - Introduction - really sets the stage for the rest of the book. It discusses the six main organization shapers: the increase buyer power; increase in the number of products and services; the Internet; multiple dimensions (functions, products, and geography, but also customer segments, solutions or offerings, and channels and processes); the requirement for a capacity to change; and speed (in bringing products and services to the market).
The following two chapters discuss how companies have to shape their organizational design, strategy, and structure in order how to deal with these organization shapers. Galbraith introduces his copyrighted Star Model (Strategy, structure, people, rewards, and processes), which looks AND sounds very similar to McKinsey's 7-S framework. Chapters 4 and 5 build on these chapter and discuss how organizations have to link their processes to coordination needs and integrate group processes. Then, in Chapter 6 discusses the easily changeable or reconfigurable organization based on the Star Model, which, according to Galbraith, results from the skilled use of three capabilities: (1) forming teams and networks across organizational departments; (2) the use of internal prices, markets, and marketlike devices to coordinate the complexity of multiple teams; and (3) the forming of partnerships to secure capabilities that it does not have. Each of these capabilities are discussed in detail.
The Chapters 7 to 10 are all very current and fashionable. They discuss the organizing around the customer, customer-focused structures, the design of the virtual corporation, and organizing the continuous design process. Although the subjects discussed are important, some of the examples are too long and take up most of the chapters. Some of the examples also do not really apply to every company/organization but are too specific. Still, these are issues that should not be forgotten about, especially organizing around the customer remains important.
I must admit that I am somewhat disappointed with this book, which is written by a leading authority in the field of organizational design. I believe it is especially the title that lets the book down. It is not so much a guide into strategies and structures; it more discusses the organization shapers and the possibilities that companies/organizations have to tackle the organization shapers. I believe that the book is especially weak in discussing organizational design and structures. Galbraith discusses his own Star-model (which reminds me of McKinsey's 7-S framework) and his reconfigurable organization (the learning organization?), but leaves all other models/designs/structures untouched. I have not been generous, the book really deserves a 3.5-star rating. The author uses simple business US-English.

The Original American Dream

It's a little presumptuous to write a "review" of a book as historically important as this, so I'll just give a few reasons why you should read it.

It's well-written and engaging, even 200+ (nearing 300+; Franklin was born in 1706) years later. It stops in 1760, well before his involvement with the Revolution, but it covers in detail his youth, apprenticeships, the formation of his philosophy and ideals, and his path from poor roots to business and social success -- the first telling of the American Dream, the idea that a poor young man could Find His Fortune in the New World through enterprise, wisdom, and work.

There is a high degree of self-hagiography here, and it would be amusing to tally up (for example) how many times Franklin praises himself vs. how many times he advises on the virtue of humility. He smooths over controversial topics like his illegitimate son, he doesn't mention his membership in the Freemasons, etc. The construction is also a bit rambling ("Then I did this thing. Next, I did another thing. Then I did a third thing"), but Franklin simply did so many interesting things -- even in this short slice of his life -- that the book is interesting despite that. There's a great deal of discussion on his scientific and inventive accomplishments, and he talks at length about his development of his own personal moral code and how he achieved business success (along with Franklin's Personal Method You Can Use for Self-Improvement -- in some ways, this is the first self-help book!)

All in all, this is very much worth reading, and gives a compelling picture of Franklin's life and times. I particularly liked the picture Franklin draws of contemporary American society -- free, open, and small, with most people in most towns all knowing each other, and business opportunities are wide open for anyone with industry and pluck. I'm not sure how similar modern-day America still is to Franklin's Philadelphia, but it's certain that Franklin -- and this book -- helped set the image that we still *want* to believe America conforms to. And for that alone, it's worth reading.

If you like this book, you might also be interested in reading Alexis de Tocqueville's _Democracy in America_, for another view of colonial-era America, or any of Mark Twain's nonfiction (_Life on the Mississippi_, _Roughing It_, etc.), for similar accounts of America's growth and development a hundred-odd years further on. Any of those should be available as a free Kindle download.

Homespun, History and Dreary Themes

Dr. Franklin appears to have been motivated by a desire to let the rest of us know what was right in his life and what was wrong. The latter he refers to as errata and there are precious few. The man was a world renowned Scientist, a representative of our fledgling Nation abroad, lived through the Revolution and was revered in this Nation as it sought the footing, the foundation, on which it still rests. It is a more homely version, Polonius to Laertes, advice to young persons from a successful elder. Although I was hoping for more, insight into the intellectual springs of this Nation, I was not disappointed. The autobiography itself is best read before a fire, in an easy armchair, where one might imagine reflections on life lived in the 18th century largely before we became One Nation under a God in which Dr. Franklin acknowledged only a passing acquaintance.
I should also mention that, although I have not completed all the reflections by other famous, and infamous persons on the Autobiography, I particularly enjoyed reading D. H. Lawrence's observations. Here is a taste taken from his opening salvo: "The Perfectibility of Man! Ah heaven, what a dreary theme!"

Ben Franklin, What a Guy!

I was fascinated and somehow proud to read this autobiography by one of our country's founding fathers. To learn of his morality, integrity, creativity, industry and generosity is fascinating. As a book, however, it seems to read more like a journal....something that might be passed down to a son or daughter. There are sections I found tediously long, perhaps unnecessary....almost as if Franklin didn't plan on publishing it. Included margin notes suggest credibility to this. Plus, there are no chapters; it just flows. To prove my engagement, I felt disappointed that some gaps in history are not included and it ends before his work on the Declaration of Independence (1776); the Treaty of Alliance, Amity, and Commerce with France (1778); the Treaty of Peace between England, France, and the United States (1782); and the Constitution (1787). I so wanted to read his take on this part of our history. The other aspect that made it both tiresome and intriguing is the fact that we read something that was written nearly 300 years ago, so the language is more stilted and what we consider antiquated words are used. Still, it seems like a good idea to add it to the 100 Books To Read Before You Die.

Maybe the best book I've bought this year. Historicaly accurate, full of insight and understanding. It really puts you "There" when, where, how the battles came about, were fought and ended. It doesn't take sides in the battles, while generating great interest. I loved this book and will read it again and again I'm sure.

I picked this book up on a whim at the bookstore, and I'm glad I did!

The book provide a fascinating look at some of the most pivotal battles in the ancient Middle East and Europe. Each battle is given a thorough review, including the pretext of the battle, the commanders involved, the terrain of the battle, and the sources used in recounting the battle. I especially enjoyed the illustrations showing the tactical formations and maneuvers used by each army. This gives the reader a good high-level overview of how each battle plays out.

One minor nitpick: I really wish the battle of Zama was included in this book. Reading about how Hannibal was finally defeated would have been nice. However, this is a minor quibble for a book that is otherwise excellent.

This book is great! Wonderful illustration and maps and a very useful teaching tool. You might not always get the details that you want, but this book will be a helpful resource in the visualizing some of the pivotal battles of the ancient world.

LP - Does it again! Central Am. makes it easy!

I am doing a PeaceBike trip around the world so I have read a fair share of travel guides. As I am biking I want a guide book that will prepare me for what's ahead and give me just enough tips to make the adventure fun and not a �wild hotel� chase.
Lonely Planet's Central America on a Shoestring includes everything I need. It has got very detailed maps of almost every town I pass through. It has a section for every town as to where the good eats are and often reviews the vegitarian restaurants which for this vegi-biker is a real treat!
I have found that other guidebook series give you just a few options as far as cheap places to stay but this guidebook gives you at least five places to stay in each town or city that are real bargains.
I like to learn a bit about the country I am going to before I enter it. Central America on a Shoestring has a good little history section for each country as well as many of the sites. This way when you get to Tikal you have a map in hand to follow around the ruins. You have got a concise history of what the place is about plus if you want to stay a little longer that you thought this books adds enough Places To Stay options so that you never have to panic. One other thing I really like about this book (and this may only be of real help to other bikers)is that it often gives road and uphill, downhill information which is vital when you are planning how far you are going each day. Central America on a ShoeString and a few country maps and you are set!
Their huge number of city maps, the mini Spanish language guide, the consistent and thorough sub sections all make this book a must. I might even say, the only. I used this book on my bike trip and I am writing this from Central America and I'm loving it. The book and the region!

I have just returned to Norway after a year backpacking around in Latin America (of course accompanied by the Lonely Planet books). I do not claim to be an expert, but I know what I look for in a travel guide!
This edition of the LP Central America did not disappoint me. I used it, going from Panama to Guatemala by bus(!). It is up to date on the information, and as with all the other LP books it is easy to find your way around with it. It includes maps over the big cities, good information about the hotels, restaurants, places worth visiting, and time schedules for bus, train etc. You have to take into account that this is a guide that is meant to cover the whole Central America so naturally it is not as detailed as the guides for each country separate. It is good as an overall guide if you plan to go to more than one or two countries, as you would try to cut down on the baggage to carry around.
As for the prices for hotels and food, the book is fairly accurate.. It is hard to keep up with all the changes, especially in the Latin American economy, where the inflation is "somewhat" higher than in the rest of the world. So, for prices - if you are on a backpacker-budget, do your own research, or at least be prepared for changes! (We usually multiplied the prices in the book with 1,5 and that gave us a good indicator of what to expect).
You will find that if you are walking around with the LP book under your arm, many of the local people will approach you and ask you if you need help. Say yes - even if you don't need help! It is a great opportunity to get in contact with the local people!

Travels in Nicaragua and Honduras in January 2000

My father and I traveled to Nicaragua and Honduras in January 2000. This guide was helpful as a security blanket for information on the different cities and towns we visited, but we couldn't rely much on the lodging, restaurant, and/or transit information due to it being outdated and that natural disasters had changed some of the roads/cities since the book was written.
The information on daytrips was great - we ended up seeing a couple of towns within an easy journey of Teguchigalpa, Honduras and Managua thanks to the LP guide. Especially like the organization of the LP books, which really helped outline an itinerary that made sense prior to our departure. With the "Getting there & away" section about each destination, it was easy to figure out how to modify that itinerary as needed "on the fly."
Previously, I'd used LP for travels in Bolivia and been very impressed with the detail and level of information for La Paz (the capital). We found the level of detail a little lacking in the Central America guide probably because Nicaragua/Honduras were only two small sections of the book. So I guess I'd recommend this book for an overview, but would suggest finding a guide with more current, updated detailed information and/or an increased focus on the country/cities you're visiting.
