Profound and important.

For starters, Sereny is an excellent writer. She takes the story of a child murdering a child and delicately peels away the layers of neglect that brought a young girl so far. We in the US have seen way too many young killers splash across the news. Here is at long last a book that shows us how these erruptons occur.This really ought to be a must read for any person involved in juvinile justice, education, theraphy, and any other discipline that places adults near troubled children. All of us can learn something here that will make us better family members, friends and relatives of children in crisis.

Disjointed but worth the read

I had a difficult time starting this book. It was a real slow go. But, when the author finally got into the story of Mary Bell, it is fascinating. I found Mary Bell to be all together a very unlikable person. During her incarceration, she was at times the criminal from hell. She, at all times, had no moral character. By ending the book the way Sereny does, she is trying to get us to understand why Mary was the way she was. I agree that the justice system does not know what to do with these kids. Yes, if Mary had been given psychological as well as life coping skills and had been cared for more with a loving hand than a hard one, she might have learned earlier in her life about "right and wrong". But, this in know way would excuse her for her crime or the manner of life she choose while in jail. In light of the school shootings we've had here in the states, one might think this book would shed some light. But, as with the case of Harris and Kleibold, there is no evidence of phsical or sexual child abuse. So, what of them?

Impactful, Useful and Fun to Read.

I admit it. I am Al's brother, but I fancy myself objective enough to write a sound review of his debut book.

Watching Al build a business from the ground up and enjoy great success makes me uniquely qualified to say this: This book is Al. It is his history, his philosophy of life, his successes and his trials and it is true to him and his successes. That is the personal.

If you own a business and want it to do better than it is, this brief business manifesto could be your greatest friend. Although the book is focused on the eyecare industry, their are hints, strategies, answers and methods that can make any business better and many giant corporations would be well-served to take a look and adopt some healthier and more forward-thinking policies.

As a former and part-time teacher, I believe school districts and the schools within could benefit from much of this book, as could our elected officials. Much of what makes businesses work well is common to all of our social institutions. This book is a tool for just about anyone who wants to do what they are doing better.

A great resource and a fun read. I loved it and that takes some doing.

Thought provoking and enjoyable read - highly recommended.

I really enjoyed Al Cleinman's book - a gift from Al after attending a recent Cleinman Performance Partners meeting (my partner and I were impressed enough to join on the spot). I've been an optometrist for over 30 years now and have had what I consider to be a very successful career. It took a lot trial and error, good and bad decisions and years of learning from experience to get to this point in my life. A Different Perspective should be required reading for all optometry students before they embark on their careers. The wisdom that is shared is invaluable and I wish I would have been exposed to Al's 'Different Perspective' many years ago - I have no doubt it would have enriched my professional and personal life by helping me work smarter rather than harder. I look forward to what lies ahead for my practice and recommend this thought provoking and enjoyable book to not only optometrists, but to anyone with the entrepreneurial spirit to run their own business. The lessons contained within are universal.

My Feelings Workbook review

I am a clinical social worker specialized in play therapy with children, youth, and families. So far I've used this workbook with two clients and things have/are going smoothly. The activities are a great way to open up discussion about the different levels of intensity connected to different emotions in a non threatening way. It can also easily be used in group work. I'd decribe the workbook more like a psychoeducational tool as opposed to play therapy or CBT. Obviously it's geared more towards younger children as well. Once completed, I plan on taking the thing learned to talk about different coping skills to manage the more intense emotions. Stamp of approval.

Excellent for professional or personal use with children

Children do not have the verbal skills to express what they are feeling in the same way as adults, and if you do not build their emotional intelligence at a young age things can get very messy. This book is awesome, I use it as a mental health counselor and will with my own kids when they are old enough.

Excellent anthology of the Weird West

For some reason, my reading preferences never led me towards Westerns. I read just about everything else genre-related (well, except for romance), but never got into that area. I’m not sure why. I guess horror dominated my tastes. So imagine my surprise and delight when Titan Books released DEAD MAN’S HAND, an anthology of the Weird West. I was intrigued to say the least, but I had no idea the treasures this book held in store for me. Within its pages are a vast array of bizarre and horrific stories that will enthrall even the staunchest of genre fans. And I will bet there’s something in there for non-fans as well.

I am so proud to own a copy of this book. It is chocked full of mesmerizing tales that will stun and engage readers of every kind. And it boasts some highbrow talent as well, including a few of my favorites: Tobias S. Buckell, Alan Dean Foster, Tad Williams, and Jonathan Maberry.

Every story in DEAD MAN’S HAND is written well and carefully crafted for maximum impact. The wide variety of talent showcases a multitude of unique voices and highlights each author’s distinctive style of storytelling. As a result, it is very easy to jump from one story to the next.

This great diversity of writers is one major aspect of what makes this book so enjoyable. I liked every story in this collection, obviously some more than others. But each one was a pleasure to read, and in doing so, I found a few more authors who I plan on checking out in the future.

One of my favorite stories in DEAD MAN’S HAND is “Strong Medicine” by Tad Williams. In this tale, a man arrives in town in order to help them…but nobody in town knows what he’s supposed to help with? As sundown approaches, strange things start to happen, and only the stranger knows what is going on. I love this tale because it caught me off guard; I never expected the events that were to happen within it, and the surprise is a lot of fun.

DEAD MAN’S HAND is an excellent anthology, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good, unique story. There’s so much to like in this book, including science-fiction, fantasy, and horror. As such, I would wager there’s something for everybody here. Give it a look for sure.

I think what usually comes to mind when we hear the word, “Western” are images of cowboys, horses, holstered six-guns tied down at the thigh for a quick draw, stagecoaches, cattle drives and frontier town. The list could go on and on but I would be pretty sure it would not include androids, time travel, dinosaurs, flying ships and other out of place things. That would be just Weird! John Joseph Adams has taken all this into consideration and brought us twenty-three tales of the Old West that John Wayne would never appear in. All these authors have brought a fresh spin to these tales and they are riveting entertainment. The title comes from the cards, aces and eights, that were in Wild Bill Hickok’s hand as he was gunned down from behind while playing poker. So saddle up it is time for Weird Western Tales, stories of the Old West infused with elements of the fantastic. “Dead Man’s Hand” is great fun. Let me assure you if you like westerns then you are going to really enjoy this. I recommend it highly! I really hope Mr. Adams will bring us another of these wonderful anthologies.

This isn't the same book I already had. I wanted the same book for a gift to someone and the poems in this book are different from the poems in my book.

Poets, Be Aware!

My name is Karen Ter-Sarkisian. My poet SOLITUDE is on the first page of MY copy of the book. After receiving The Colors of Life I was proud for a while. I thought since my poem was on the very first page, it was the best, or one of the best poems in the collection. Until I found out the truth: every poet has his or her poem on the first page of their copy(s). This is a trick: making you to believe that you are the best in order to make you send more poems, spend more money. Vanity Publication-that how it is called. To pay in order to be published. Each participant poet must pay $49.99 for their copy which regularly would be no more than $15 retail price. Vanity publications don't have any value for our career as poets. Now, if someone is willing to pay couple of dollars (no more than that) to purchase this book, go ahead, there are some really good poems, but also really bad ones as well.

Great compliation!

I don't read much poetry, but someone very close to me wrote a wonderful poem that happened to end up in this book. So of course, I automatically love it! But, I also found many other interesting, and varied, poems while browsing through the rest of it. It is a fun collection written by a wide range of people - some professional writers, others who just write on the side. All in all, a charming book, and I love it! I'm glad they printed this.

Another one knocked out of the ballpark by Brett Bacon!

I have known this author’s work in the field of sales for many years, both as a writer and consultant. I hired Brett as a consultant to help me increase sales in my business. I was very pleased with the results. Bacon’s expert advice on sales and marketing lead immediately to higher sales in my own business. He is the real deal and if you want to increase your sales numbers, this book will definitely help you to do just that.
