Good review with example problems

I teach in a professional masters program, which means many of our students are continuing their educations after a several-year hiatus from classroom-style mathematics. We teach math refreshers at the beginning of the program, but four hours of classroom time doesn't do much beyond helping students diagnose the areas where they need to practice. We wanted to refer the students to a resource that would help them with the extra practice needed to re-develop forgotten skills, preferably before failing problem sets or midterms.

Our faculty committee looked at several algebra review textbooks and decided that Forgotten Algebra (3rd edition) offered the best blend of explanation, coverage, and practice problems. I remember one student started out doing very badly in my economics class, brought the book to me and asked which chapters to review, and within a few weeks was doing dramatically better. While the student deserves the credit there, the book was clearly a useful aid.

The fourth edition appears to improve on the third by offering more worked example problems.

Over the past three years, our program has been quite satisfied using Forgotten Algebra as our recommended refresher text for students who learned this material once but need to be reminded of it. We do wish it paid more attention to graphing.

Super for someone who took Algebra almost 40 years ago!

Excellent aid for this old guy who almost flunked algebra as a freshman in 1960 and passed a remedial algebra college class in 1975 only because it only had weekly tests and no final exam. This book is far and away the most suitable for me and I have tried two others. I want to get up to speed to follow more of the math in the Coursera (dot org) classes I have been taking.

Awesome workbook!

Going back to college to get my degree so it's been over 30 years since I've had any exposure to a math class. Granted, I never had any problems with math before but I knew I was totally unprepared for starting college algebra. This book has helped tremendously in getting me on track. It's very easy to read and comprehend with a good variety of problems to practice on and detailed explanations without going overboard. In other words, it gives you exactly what you need to know without any fluff or nonsense while being easily understood. I highly recommend it.

About the Author
Stephen R. Turns has been a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University since completing his PhD at the University of Wisconsin in 1979. Before completing his PhD Steve spent five years in the Engine Research Department of General Motors Research Laboratories in Warren, Michigan. His active research interests include the study of pollutant formation and control in combustion systems, combustion engines, combustion instrumentation, slurry fuel combustion, energy conversion, and energy policy. He has published numerous refereed journal articles on many of these topics. Steve Turns is a member of the ASME and many other professional organizations and an ASME-ABET Program Evaluator since 1994. Steve is also a dedicated teacher for which he has won numerous awards including the Penn State Teaching and Learning Consortium, Hall of Fame Faculty Award; Penn State's Milton S. Eisenhower Award for Distinguished Teaching; the Premier Teaching Award, Penn State Engineering Society; and the Outstanding Teaching Award, Penn State Engineering Society. Steve's talent as a teacher is also reflected in his best-selling advanced undergraduate textbook Introduction to Combustion: Concepts and Applications 2/e. Steve's commitment to students and teaching is reflected in the innovative approach and design of Thermal-Fluid Sciences: An Integrated Approach and its companion volume Thermodynamics, also published by Cambridge University Press.

This is a textbook so what can you expect? It's boring at times and has lots of practice problems. I would say the practice problems are challenging, but not difficult. Definitely one of the better textbooks I've had to learn from.

I'm a teacher and I think that this is the best text book to design a proper Thermodynamics course, the application examples and the practical point of view of the thermodynamics thehory have convinced me that this is a very nice purchase. I hope to complete my opinion when I have it.

Conversation piece; or the dude with four eye pupils

After wearing out the paperbacks I inherited from my great aunt Bessie, I was thrilled to find this hardbound edition of the Ripley's Believe It Or Not? books. As a child, I think I bought into most of these stories, some of which explain away their headlines as you read them; some of which are unsubstantiated and farfetched--and many more which could very possibly have been true. This is short-attention-span reading at its finest, with lots of simple illustrations. This book as a whole would never stand up to scientific rigor, and I must admit part of the reason I like it so much is pure nostalgia, as reading it brings back memories of childhood. However, it is certainly entertaining, and as the title suggests, wondrous and strange indeed.

My cousin had this volume as part of a set of encyclopedias! We pored over it constantly as teenagers. I still find this book fascinating, and am sure anyone with a sense of curiosity will enjoy it immensely. Unlike current versions of BOIN, this book is illustrated by Robert Ripley's excellent drawings and cartoons rather than photographs. I think it adds to the mystique of the strange and bizarre, believe it or not!

Currey, Jr. Professor of Management and Principal Senior Lecturer in the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University, where he specializes in the study of leadership and organization theory. Dr. Daft is a fellow of the Academy of Management and has served on the editorial boards of Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, and Journal of Management Education. He was associate editor-in-chief of Organization Science and associate editor of Administrative Science Quarterly. Dr. Daft has authored or co-authored 13 books, including The Executive and the Elephant, Organization Theory and Design, and Management. He also has authored dozens of scholarly articles, papers, and chapters, and he has published in the Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Management; Accounting, Organizations and Society, Management Science, MIS Quarterly, and Organizational Behavior Teaching Review. well written book with helpful examples explaining the content

This textbook is a requirement for a Contemporary Management Theory class that I am taking. I am in the first couple of chapters and so far I am enjoying the material. Very good examples shared to explain the content and the professor loves this edition. My only knock is around the price. $300+ for a book? Come on.... I was able to find it a little cheaper because it was used but these crazy prices are really hurting students.
