Capitol Revolution: The Rise of the McMahon Wrestling Empire, by Tim Hornbaker

The definitive take on the McMahon family’s journey to wrestling domination

For decades, the northeastern part of the United States, better known to insiders as the territory of the Capitol Wrestling Corporation, was considered the heart of the professional wrestling world. Capitol territory — from Boston to Washington, D.C. — enjoyed lucrative box office receipts, and New York’s Madison Square Garden was center stage. Three generations of McMahons have controlled wrestling in that storied building and have since created the most powerful wrestling company the world has ever known.

Capitol Revolution documents the growth and evolution of pro wrestling under the stewardships of the McMahons, highlighting the many trials and tribulations beginning in the early 20th century: clashes with rival promoters, government inquests, and routine problems with the potent National Wrestling Alliance monopoly. In the ring, superstars such as Buddy Rogers and Bruno Sammartino entertained throngs of fans, and Capitol became internationally known for its stellar pool of vibrant performers.

Covering the transition from old-school wrestling, under the WWWF banner, to the pop-cultural juggernaut of the mid- to late-’80s WWF, Tim Hornbaker’s Capitol Revolution is the detailed history of how the McMahons outlasted their opponents and fostered a billion-dollar empire.

A wonderful resource but a misleading cover
By Lavie Margolin
If this book had been marketed differently, it would have received 5 stars from me. I struggled with the rating but I cannot understand why the publisher would put a picture of Hulk Hogan on the cover when his name appears only 3-4 times in the book? It seems deceptive as a picture of Bruno Sammartino, Nature Boy Buddy Rogers or Vince McMahon, Sr. would have been much more appropriate.

With that out of the way, I would like to say that this book is an excellent resource for pro wrestling historians. The book really picks up momentum after the halfway mark and tells the story of the WWWF in the pre titan sports days. This book must have been a labor of love for the author and I commend and thank him for it.

I do have one additional quibble- the information about Jess McMahon was fascinating but it seems to get lost in the author setting the context for that time period. It almost seemed like Jess had to be pushed as if he was more prominent than he was to make the premise of the book work.

I'd love to see more historical pieces by this author. I did read his NWA book, which was great as well.

Before Steve Austin, before Hulk Hogan, before Vince McMahon, there was... another Vince McMahon
By Andrew F.
Impeccably researched, this book details the history of pro wrestling in the 1900's before the Hulkamania and Attitude eras of the 80's and 90's. Focused on the McMahon family (Vince McMahon's father and grandfather), the author digs into the growth of the Northeast territory and all the political, competitive, and internal struggles along the way, including the rise and fall of wrestlers like Buddy Rogers and Bruno Sammartino. It's interesting to learn how these wrestlers came to be champions; many times the titles were determined as much by loyalty and backstage machinations as by their in-ring abilities and crowd appeal.

This was the era when wrestling was "real," meaning that it was not openly acknowledged to be entertainment, and the promoters had little reason to keep notes or proper records. The last major national promotion, the WWE, does little to acknowledge its heritage prior to the 1980's, either. The author is to be commended for pulling together this history in spite of these limitations, relying on newspaper clippings and interviews to compile the facts. At times the prose is a bit dry, but this work will appeal to wrestling enthusiasts who want to learn more about the sport's history and how the WWE got to be the force that it is today.

Another great book by Tim Hornbaker!
By Amazon Customer
Great book by Tim Hornbaker. Tim always does amazing research on his books and this one is no different. An amazing walk through the twentieth century and the McMahon Family's rise to power in professional wrestling with the WWWF,WWF & WWE. Truly an informative read and one that people who want to understand how wrestling works (and how it came to be), should read. Great job Tim and I highly recommended this book!

About the Author
M.R. Polish was born in Idaho, a long, long, long, maybe not that long time ago.... Writing has always been there for her. Growing up, her mind was filled with stories, some she shared and others she filed away to write down later in life. It wasn't until 2011 that she decided to publish her stories for everyone to enjoy. Her first award and when writing became more than just an idea was in the 5th grade. She won the scary story contest for the school newspaper. It is one story she still has tucked away for memories. Her teacher told her she could be anything she wanted and that she had a talant for writing, being creative and drawing people into her stories. M.R. took that to heart and continued to write, although mostly in secret until recent years. Now you can find her enjoying life with her family - wrangling her four kids, setting traps in the house with toys for unsuspecting victims (aka, her husband) and writing down all her crazy and fun stories. "Life is too short to stand by and watch everyone else live your dreams. The bigger the dream, the bigger the adventure!" ~ M.R. Polish

Great sequel!
By Kim
This was an amazing read! There were twists and turns, not only in plot, but characters as well. I just love Ian and Es together! I am very thankful that there is not a love triangle. Es realizes who she loves and she sticks by her decision. I liked her decision as well. We meet some new characters in this book. I really liked one of them, only during a fight scene she (spoiler). We meet the Death Keeper, who is the leader of Hell and who makes deals with people. By the end of the book, he becomes a likeable character, but keep in mind who and what he is. (I think that will make more sense when you read the book.)
I guess if there was one thing I didn't like about the story it was that one of the main characters (spoiler). It broke my heart and I am hoping that something changes in the next book. I have to be honest and say that if it stays like it is, I am not sure I would want to read the next book because this one thing that happened would probably keep me from rereading the series. This is just a pet-peeve with me, not anything with the book. The book was really awesome!

I love the realtionship between the Guardians and wolves, as well as the love and respect that is shown between family and friends.
I highly recommend this book, but be ready for some "oohh and aahh" moments.

This book has some mild language, some creepiness/torture scenes (not too graphic) with all that pertains to Nicholas, some kissing and two scenes of premarital sex, which was not graphic at all. It was more of just letting us know that it happened.(Just wanted to put this in my review in case parents were reviewing this book for their younger children)

All in all, I would recommend it for YA and older. (Me being in the older category! HAHA!) I will wait and see what the next book holds before I read it.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

**UPDATE** All is well with my "pet-peeve"! The author has assured me that all will be well with the character I was heartbroken over. "Character" has good things awaiting "Character" in the next book!!! YAY! So, overlook my concern earlier in my review and read this series. You will not be disappointed!!! We just have to wait on the next book!

Cover Art~ Wow can I just say that I adore this cover and can't wait to see it on my self! It is so beautiful! I love the color contrast and that you see Es sleeping and someone watching her while she sleeps. This cover begs to be read!

My Review~
WOW OH WOW OH OMG!! This book is full of twists turns and add an emotional rollercoaster with it makes one heck of a book! This book is beyond awesome! It is even better than the first which was hard to beat!! I felt as I was in the book and I was captivated by the story from chapter 1! I experienced all the emotions that Es, Jarak, and Ian had through this wonderful story. This book really had be enthralled and captivated! Did I mention what A FREAKING AWESOME ENDING!! Can't wait to see what is in store for Es and Ian in the next book! I loved the scenery and the descriptions of the characters. I also loved the interactions between them they are so funny. Es is awesome!! LOVE IT! I love her fiery temper! In this novel, hang on tight there are going to be some happy and sad moments! Can't wait to see what else this amazing author can concocked in her writing genius mind!

Book Description from Goodreads~
The Reaping Spell has weakened her greatest enemy, but now Esmerelda faces a different threat - one that haunts her dreams. To finally defeat Nicholas and end his madness for good, she must travel back to Spain with the help of her powerful friends.

What she doesn't know is that in his weakness, Nicholas made a deal with the Death Keeper - his soul in exchange for Esmerelda's life. Worse, she soon learns that the ones she trusted most have become part of her nightmares. The only one she can trust is the man who holds her heart, and together they must fight Nicholas to the death.

Fighting to stay awake so Nicholas can't find her in sleep, Esmerelda prepares for the battle that will finish this war. One of them must die for her nightmares to end - unless the Death Keeper, with plans of his own for Esmerelda's soul, gets to her first.

Love it ALL! Must. Have. MORE.
By Albinomex ~ Jeni's Bookshelf
Holy Moley what have you done?!? Never in a million years did I think someone could have me liking the devil himself! And actually looking forward to his return in the story ... yeah that was just weird! BUT... I LOVE it ALL! These characters grasp ahold never letting go. I think Esmeralda rocks! (Pfft...as if her & my daughter having the same name wasn't enough to make me like her instantly!) Seriously though, even the bad guys have depth, mystery, & beg for you to love them. With them I laughed, cried, & screamed at times. I love a story that can make me laugh with plenty of twists, loads of action, a bit of romance, & a whole lot of awesome. Wolf Dream's got it! Magic, Shifters, True Love, Comedy, Drama, & Action!
Must. Have. More.

The Wild Vine: A Forgotten Grape and the Untold Story of American Wine, by Todd Kliman

A rich romp through untold American history featuring fabulous characters, The Wild Vine is the tale of a little-known American grape that rocked the fine-wine world of the nineteenth century and is poised to do so again today.

Author Todd Kliman sets out on an epic quest to unravel the mystery behind Norton, a grape used to make a Missouri wine that claimed a prestigious gold medal at an international exhibition in Vienna in 1873. At a time when the vineyards of France were being ravaged by phylloxera, this grape seemed to promise a bright future for a truly American brand of wine-making, earthy and wild. And then Norton all but vanished. What happened?
The narrative begins more than a hundred years before California wines were thought to have put America on the map as a wine-making nation and weaves together the lives of a fascinating cast of renegades. We encounter the suicidal Dr. Daniel Norton, tinkering in his experimental garden in 1820s Richmond, Virginia. Half on purpose and half by chance, he creates a hybrid grape that can withstand the harsh New World climate and produce good, drinkable wine, thus succeeding where so many others had failed so fantastically before, from the Jamestown colonists to Thomas Jefferson himself. Thanks to an influential Long Island, New York, seed catalog, the grape moves west, where it is picked up in Missouri by German immigrants who craft the historic 1873 bottling. Prohibition sees these vineyards burned to the ground by government order, but bootleggers keep the grape alive in hidden backwoods plots. Generations later, retired Air Force pilot Dennis Horton, who grew up playing in the abandoned wine caves of the very winery that produced the 1873 Norton, brings cuttings of the grape back home to Virginia. Here, dot-com-millionaire-turned-vintner Jenni McCloud, on an improbable journey of her own, becomes Norton’s ultimate champion, deciding, against all odds, to stake her entire reputation on the outsider grape.
Brilliant and provocative, The Wild Vine shares with readers a great American secret, resuscitating the Norton grape and its elusive, inky drink and forever changing the way we look at wine, America, and long-cherished notions of identity and reinvention.

The Wild Vine is a wonder—fun, smart, fascinating, eye-opening. It’s the wine book as a thrilling mystery.

It’s the true story of a man obsessed by a grape: the Norton, invented by a driven American who named the variety he created after himself. Stubborn, ambitious, a product of his time and place, and also a uniquely American inventor, Daniel Norton.

But Norton is just one of the unforgettable characters Todd Kliman brings us. The other is Michael Marsh, a multi-millionaire software guru who glimpses a new life for himself when he takes his first sip of the Norton. That epiphany sends him on a rollicking journey of personal discovery, one that sees him change his sex and establish a winery meant to restore the doctor's legacy.

Beyond these poignant, enthralling stories, The Wild Vine gives you the history of wine-making in America. What’s amazing is that the career of American wineries follows that of America herself; only when growers found the courage to use national varieties—that is, only when Americans discovered their own character of grape—did American wine come into its own.

It’s also the story of German American immigration; of the American viticultural scene (which used to be Missouri!); of Prohibition; even of sexual politics in America.

In captivating prose Kliman relates one of those magical little American stories that illuminate the whole country. And so The Wild Vine is not only a wonderful, strange read; it’s a first-rate American history lesson.

From Publishers Weekly
In this engaging history, food and wine writer Kliman focuses on the Norton, an American grape hybrid, its namesake early 19th-century creator, and its current-day advocate. Going back to the early efforts of American grape growing and winemaking, Kliman assembles a solid biography of the bereaved doctor and amateur horticulturalist whose Jeffersonian devotion to a native American grape and wine eventually led to the birth of a new variety. Despite viticultural progress and recognition, however muted, and his efforts to draw the former president's interest, Norton died without achieving viticultural success and was lost to history. Kliman's narrative discloses the hidden story of the Norton's nurturing over the decades in the Midwest and the role of German-Americans and other immigrants in its survival. Through means and methods like homemade winemaking, the hardy fruit endured blight and Prohibition, and was eventually restored to its native Virginia soil, where the book's other dominant and most colorful personality, a transsexual, was liberated by her physical change to professionally pursue the grape's cultivation. "Kliman's thorough research and entertaining spin on the Norton's history make for a vintage that goes down smooth." -- T. Rees-Shapiro, Washington Post Book World

"Who knew a grape could generate so much history, so much commerce, so much entrancing narrative, so much splendid writing.Todd Kliman's The Wild Vine is as brilliantly successful a hybrid as its subject: combining the best characteristics of history and memoir, biography and travelogue, it is an utter delight."
--Robert Olen Butler, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain

"ToddKliman'sThe Wild Vineis beautiful andeye-opening and you'll enjoy it as you woulda bracing and wonderful wine. It's a mystery story, a history lesson, a personal journeybetween hard covers: a great, American vintage."
--Darin Strauss, author ofChang & EngandMore Than It Hurts You

"This book will moveyou inwaysthat might surprise you, for The Wild Vine is about much more than an obscure American grape; it's about heartbreak, determination, courage, and humanity. If in vino veritas, this may be the truest story ever told, and Todd Kliman tells it with grace and sensitivity."
--Don and Petie Kladstrup, authors of Wine and War

"A fascinating, well-written and researched cross-generational journey that follows the DNA of a single grape variety that I had never heard of before.I don't know if the Norton grape will make it as one of the great wines of the world, but its history, and the eccentric characters who carried its hope for a wine that could be grown and vinified in Virginia, of all places, makes for page-turning reading."
--Rex Pickett, author of Sideways

"Kliman tells the ups and downs of Norton with equal panache, pointing a bright light on grape hybrids, an important yet little-known part of the wine world, and introducing a cast of interesting characters along the way. While reading this book, I kept wishing that I had a bottle of Norton at my elbow."
--George M. Taber, author of Judgment of Paris

"A well-researched and fascinating story that reads like a novel. A true and highly entertaining American tale."
--Anthony Dias Blue, The Tasting Panel magazine, WCBS, KABC

"This is a terrific book. If it were a wine, it would be expressive but earthy, subtly spiced, with great structure and a long, lingering finish."
--Toby Young, of Top Chef

"Hold on for an entertaining and enlightening 400-year, transcontinental, trans-cultural investigation of the greatest wine you’ve never heard of. Todd Kliman squeezes a hell of a yarn from a grape."
--Daniel Evan Weiss, author of The Roaches Have No King and The Swine's Wedding

Tasty Tale That Hits All The Right Notes
By Bruce Loveitt
When I ordered this book through the, ahem, Vine Program, I expected a rather straightforward story about the history of a little-known American grape, the Norton, and its inventor, Dr. Daniel Norton. To Todd Kliman's credit, he gives us that story and a whole lot more. We learn about the failed attempts over a 200 year period to make a decent wine in America. Mostly it was a failure because people wanted to make wine using European grapes. But grapes are sensitive and don't usually do well in areas they are not native to. So growing French or Italian or Spanish grapes in Virginia, say, didn't work out very well. The vines are attacked by diseases, besides the fact that the weather and soil are different. But when Daniel Norton tinkered with some native varieties and invented the Norton, he came up with a winner. When the wine made from the Norton was young it tasted good, and when it aged it tasted even better. The grape eventually made its way out to Missouri which, back in the middle 1800's, was THE winemaking capital of the United States. (Nothing against Missouri, but that fact knocked me out!) As Mr. Kliman explains, after the transcontinental railroad was built California took off as the winemaking hotspot of the country, as the product could then be shipped quickly and easily, and the California climate was admirably suited to growing European vinifera grapes. California eclipsed Missouri quite rapidly, and Prohibition in the early 20th century pretty much finished off winemaking in the East and Midwest, as federal agents dug up and destroyed the vines. (Come to think of it, Mr. Kliman doesn't explain why Prohibition didn't finish off California as a winemaking state, but I'm guessing that would be a long story and a good topic for a different book!) All of this was interesting enough, but Mr. Kliman also weaves in the fascinating story of Jenni McCloud, a self-made multimillionaire who entered the winemaking business late and who wants to rescue the Norton grape from the obscurity it has fallen into. Ms. McCloud feels that several native American grapes can make outstanding wines and she bucks the trend of most American winemakers who stick to using famous European grapes, such as Chardonnay and Merlot. Her attitude is, why be the millionth person to make a Chardonnay or Merlot? Why not try to make good wines from some different, native grapes that have proven in the past that with hard work and patience they can compete in quality with European varieties? Many winemakers are scared to do this, because they are afraid people won't accept something different. But perhaps it's possible that if people are given something different to try they might develop a taste for it. Raising the book to an even higher level is the personal odyssey of Jenni McCloud. I don't want to give anything away, but let's just say that completely disregarding the wine connection, her story is fascinating in-and-of-itself. The cherry on the whipped cream is the fact that Mr. Kliman writes wonderfully well. The prose is thoughtful, elegant and even beautiful in places. Sometimes you feel as though you are reading a really good novel, that's how fine the writing is. Highly recommended.

A fascinating story...
By Chambolle
How many times have you come home from a long hard day at the office and said to yourself, "What I need right now is a thick, rare, grilled steak, a big refreshing green salad, a fresh baguette and a darned good bottle of _________"?

Fill in the blank, and you might have said "Cabernet," or "Pinot Noir" or "Syrah"; possibly "Chambolle-Musigny" or "Cote Rotie" or "Barolo"; or any one of a hundred things. What you probably did not say was "Norton's Virginia Seedling," or just "Norton." That's likely because you haven't even HEARD of "Norton," the grape developed by Daniel Norton in Virginia in the first half of the 19th century. I'm not sure I had heard of it either. If I had, I'd long since forgotten about it, and I sure as heck had not ever tasted the stuff, much less given it a lot of thought. I'm not alone in that regard. I pulled out my well worn copy of Jancis Robinson's "Vines, Grapes & Wines," an extensive review of wine grape varietals from all over the world. In Robinson's ampelographic universe, the Norton merits a glancing mention in a one paragraph laundry list of "other red hybrids grown in the United States and occasionally encountered as varietals." No wonder "Norton" is not even a blip on my radar screen.

This book will fill that gap in your wine education, as it did mine, in an entertaining way. It will take you from the early settlements in Jamestown to Jefferson at Monticello. From brooding, melancholic Daniel Norton, for whom the grape is named, to the productive and prosperous Missouri viticultural scene of the late 19th and early 20th centuries (founded in large part on cultivation of Norton vines), to the Prohibition era that drove a stake in Missouri's viticultural heart. And finally, to the modern revival of Norton cultivation, with a detour here for one winemaker's "sexual reassignment surgery," there for the author's ailing father and teething toddler, and there yet again to other parts hither and yon.

It's a bit of a roller coaster ride, but an interesting one. I'll have to find a good bottle or two of reasonably mature Norton and give the varietal a try.

The book is not without its flaws, and thus four rather than five stars. The firm hand of a strong willed editor might have been helpful. Kliman's prose can at times be as dense as a barrel sample of Cornas and every bit as rough hewn. There are occasional forays into over the top, almost comical melodrama. Convoluted, overlong sentences that should have been divided into two, three or even four simpler and more direct and declarative ones are not uncommon.

But no matter. The book is a more than worthwhile read. It is obviously a labor of love. It also appears to be well-researched and ends with a substantial bibiliography, should you be inclined to delve further into the history and modern culture of "Norton's Virginia Seedling."

I say go for it.

Fascinating, Thoughtful Story of An American Grape
By Gregg Eldred
Is there such a thing as American wine from an American grape? Sure, the United States has its share of wineries; California, Oregon, Washington all produce excellent wines, equalling or surpassing their European counterparts. However, what they are growing are European grapes in America. Does America have a grape that is "native" and can produce a well regarded, drinkable wine? Actually, we do and we can. For example, Catawba. However, there is another grape that deserves attention, Norton.

You can be forgiven if you have never heard of the Norton grape. But if you live in Virginia or Missouri and do not know of this grape, I am saddened and disappointed. It is a part of your state's history. In fact, Missouri has designated the Norton as the State Grape.

The Norton takes center stage in Todd Kliman's The Wild Vine: A Forgotten Grape and the Untold Story of American Wine. Tracing the history of winemaking in the United States, Kliman takes the reader back in time to the time of the Jamestown settlers. One of their missions was to establish vineyards in the New World. Plantings of European vines were not suited to the climate, soil, or diseases of the new land and the efforts were in vain. However, that did not stop the settlers or those that arrived after them. Thomas Jefferson, who loved European wines, even tried his hand at growing grapes, but those efforts ended in failure. A contemporary of Jefferson, Dr. Daniel Norton, creates a hybrid grape that withstands the harsh climate and produces a very good, drinkable wine. Dr. Norton has succeeded where so many before him, even the learned Jefferson, have failed.

Dr. Norton's grape is added to the premier seed catalog of the time, where it is picked up by German immigrants in Missouri. An entire town, an entire industry is based on the Norton grape, which results in Missouri becoming the United States' leading producer of wine. Until the opening of the Transcontinental Railroad, which allowed California to become the top producer of wine. Then came Prohibition, which destroyed Missouri winemaking. At that point, the Norton disappears.

Interspersed with the history of the Norton grape in The Wild Vine, Kliman introduces Jenni McCloud, a Virginia winemaker whose life's mission is to educate the wine drinking public about the Norton and to return it to its rightful place at the top of American wines. Jenni is an excellent addition to the narrative, she is passionate, driven, eloquent, and, at times, vulgar. She is a woman not afraid of "conventional wisdom" or the work required to bring the gift of wine from the Norton. It is work that not many vintners are willing to tackle for many reasons. Ms. McCloud is a person with an attitude well suited for the Norton; unlike other wineries in America, she wants her Chrysalis Vineyard to produce the world's best Norton wines, not the 300th best Chardonnay, Cabernet or Merlot.

A thoughtful, well researched, thoroughly entertaining chronical on the Norton, Todd Kliman's The Wild Vine: A Forgotten Grape and the Untold Story of American Wine will introduce you to the history of a truly American grape, fascinating, interesting characters, and a new appreciation for wine, especially the Norton. It is a book that should be read by all wine lovers, it is an eye opening look at America and its rich, but brief (as compared to France, for example) history of viticulture. For all students of history, it reveals a little known, but very interesting, chapter in American history. Kliman's writing style will make you forget that you are reading a "history" book, it is more like a work from a popular mystery writer. It moves quickly, from the past to present day, making important and engaging stops along the way. Further, he provides the reader with fascinating, engaging, and delightful characters, which creates a much more intriguing tale. The Wild Vine is a book not to be passed over like some $5 bottle of wine. This is a thoughtful, complex, and pleasing book that will remain on your palate long after turning the last page.

Jenni McCloud has much more work to do, but she has converted this wine lover into a Norton proponent, even though I have not had the pleasure of experiencing a Norton wine. However, while I am attempting to correct that, it will not be easy. I called a very good, local wine shop shortly after finishing the early chapters, to acquire a Norton. "I'd like a wine from Virginia," I said. "I didn't know that Virginia had wineries," was the reply. I decided to take another tact. "I'd like a wine made from the Norton grape." "What's that?" came the response. Not to be easily dissuaded, I will patiently wait for them to locate and procure a few bottles. What I cannot wait for is to unleash the Norton on my unsuspecting friends. And to entertain them with the history contained within the bottle. A history not like any other vine.

Excellent Start to a New Drizzt Trilogy
By Thalia
The war in the Silver Marches is over and the dwarves battle to reclaim Gauntlygrym while chaos reigns in Menzoberranzan as Abyssal demons walk the streets. After what I refer to as "the dark years" of the Spellplague and its aftermath in the Transitions trilogy and the Neverwinter Saga quartet, RA Salvatore returns with "Archmage" and Drizzt and the Companions of the Hall have never been in better form. This is Drizzt, Bruenor and Cattie-brie at their finest.

What a great story teller
By Sue D
And the saga continues!! Love the audio companion feature that Amazon and Audible offer when purchasing these books. I read some, listen some, and it enables me to continue "reading" without too many gaps, which is necessary for the tales of Drizzt and his companions!

Archmage does not rivet or flow quite as well as the Vengeance of the Iron Dwarf, but boy, is it good!

Absolutely a Great read...

Absolutely a Great read... each and every book! Some a little better or more exciting... but all quite good.
I cannot say enough about this series as it is GREAT reading an adventure with the most endearing and not-so-endearing characters.
My only complaint is that I am now caught up and waiting for the next book to be out -- and I hate waiting.

Great reference guide
By S.A.S.
I've been using this book as a quick grammar reference for university level Arabic classes for several years now (picked it up soon after it came out) and don't have much to complain about. Schulz's book is concise, compact, thorough, and relatively inexpensive. The layout isn't completely intuitive and may be confusing if you aren't used to Arabic grammar references. The index is laid out nicely and is easily accessible. I have no problem using this book in class to quickly find and clarify an aspect of grammar without falling behind the rest of the students. Its the perfect complement to Arabic instructional materials like the Al-Kitaab series, which do a good job of introducing grammatical rules and structures but aren't easy to reference and lack concise explanations.

A few things are worth mentioning however...

* You need to be able to read Arabic script to effectively use the book as the examples are not transliterated.

* You should have at least a basic knowledge of Arabic before using this book, or you won't get much out of it. Its probably best if you have studied Arabic for at least a year, as you will not need this book much for the first year of study. For intermediate level students and higher this book is great for review, but if you have not been introduced to a concept previously it is difficult to learn it through this book. Combining this reference with Al-Kitaab and a competent instructor works well, and as you become more proficient in the language this book becomes increasingly useful.

* Again, to clarify; this book is not supposed to teach you Arabic grammar, it is a reference tool. To quote the preface, "Not all the rules are explained in detail since the room assumes that the user already knows Arabic and should be able to deduce the rule in question from the examples quoted." This doesn't mean the book is useless for non-advanced students, just that you need to supplement it with instructional materials (and an instructor!). I personally found the book disappointing until my knowledge of Arabic grammar grew and I could make sense of the examples and terminology.

* Depending on your knowledge of Arabic and linguistics (and Arabic linguistics in particular) you may need to study the basic lexicon before being able to effectively use this book. The grammatical concepts and terms are referred to and indexed in both English and Arabic. If you are still working on basic grammar you probably are only comfortable in one or the other, so you should use either the English or Arabic terms and not both to avoid confusion. I've found that this book is helping me to understand Arabic grammar in both languages as I try to learn the English terminology when reviewing topics, and I can now compare the grammars of both English and Arabic easier.

For example, I now know that al-marfoo3, al-manSub, al-majzum and al-amr are moods, and that Arabic contains two voices. Before I didn't associate imperative with anything else and only thought of the aforementioned concepts in relation to their case ending rather than their grammatical function. If you had asked me what accusative or jussive meant before I got this book I wouldn't have had a clue.

The reviewer Colin is right that this book isn't for the beginning student, but it isn't just for advanced students either. I think he was looking for an instructional text, which may explain much of his review. Still, in response to some of his points... Masdar is a very basic concept and isn't too difficult compared to many of the other grammatical structures so it doesn't need many pages for elaboration. The verb charts are organized correctly, on page 12 Schulz clarifies with, "The order of persons in the Arabic conjugational paradigm is 3rd person - 2nd person - 1st person. This complies with Arab tradition and the practice pursued in nearly all Arabic textbooks." The dual forms are necessary to learn for literary Arabic, though for beginning students they can be ignored. The "'added' extra marks" are diacritics denoting the short vowels and are absolutely essential for literary (esp. classical) Arabic as they mark case and help identify the form used. If you have not used vocalized script before you certainly haven't progressed far enough to need this book!

The reviewer Just Another Linguist also has some misconceptions about the text. The book is organized into three parts: verbs, nouns, and syntax. Within each section the concepts are organized into further sub-divisions. It all flows nicely and the organization works well for a reference grammar, though if you wanted to learn Arabic grammar the organization is not suited to working through the whole book which may be the reason for such comments. I haven't noticed anything in the way of typographical errors, and certainly nothing to diminish the quality the text. The complaint about price feels odd to me as this is probably the cheapest Arabic-study related book I own and it is well worth the price!

I wasn't going to write a review for this book until I saw the existing ones, which I don't feel appropriately represent the text. 'A Student Grammar of Modern Standard Arabic' is a great reference guide that is best used in conjunction with other instructional materials or by those with decent existing knowledge of Arabic grammar. Its compact and easily transportable, well-organized and indexed, has examples for everything, isn't very expensive, and will be useful for as long as you continue to use/study Arabic.

Okay, but there are better, more reasonably-priced alternatives
By Just Another Linguist
This is a comprehensive treatment of Arabic grammar that suffers from (1) extremely strange organization (important, common topics are discussed after much more obscure ones have been treated) and (2) a price that seems, to me, to be too high for what you get. Additionally, there are many typographical errors.

However, the reviewer who critiques this book based on what he thinks he learned in first-year Arabic is misinformed. The Arabic verb system is commonly described as "perfect" and "imperfect," rather than "past" and "present," by many Arabic grammarians; this isn't a quirk of Schulz's, much less something Schulz does just to be difficult! Additionally, the "anaa, anta, anti" order of presenting verbs is not the way verbs are traditionally presented in the Arabic world - this order was borrowed from the traditional way of teaching European languages, and although many English-language Arabic texts use it, there's nothing particularly odd about using the Arabic system instead.

Finally, the vowel marks the other reviewer thinks are "extra" or "added" are perfectly standard in formal Arabic. (They're not normally spoken aloud, and as a result many introductory Arabic classes omit them ... but they're certainly not wrong!)

indispensable
By Joseph L. Anderson
Perfect quick reference guide for advanced-intermediate readers of Arabic. Print quality is great. Typos are few if any (fewer than one would expect, in any case). Don't pay any attention to others' complaints about the organization being weird. That charge is simply not true. The explantions are concise, but thorough and well-worded. The table of contents and English index are straight-forward and user-friendly. All of this combined with an (invaluable) Arabic function-word index make this book more than adequate (I would even say indispensable) for around 95% of an advanced learner's grammatical reference needs. I also recommend acquiring Karin Ryding's Reference Grammar of Modern Standard Arabic as a back up, for the (less than) 5% of the time when you need more detail on some obscure irregular (hamzated/weak/hollow/defective, etc) verb/participial form in a certain measure (for example). Believe me, in most cases Schulz's book has everything you will need and you will quickly be able to find it. Lastly, the book is very reasonably priced. Buy it, you won't be sorry.

By the way, this is a book to refer to as you deveolp you skills reading Arabic literature. If you don't have a basic reading knowledge of Arabic, then you need to be in a class with a teacher and a beginning Arabic textbook of some kind.

The only thing more indispensable to me than this book is Hans Wehr's dictionary itself. Enough said.
