After wearing out the paperbacks I inherited from my great aunt Bessie, I was thrilled to find this hardbound edition of the Ripley's Believe It Or Not? books. As a child, I think I bought into most of these stories, some of which explain away their headlines as you read them; some of which are unsubstantiated and farfetched--and many more which could very possibly have been true. This is short-attention-span reading at its finest, with lots of simple illustrations. This book as a whole would never stand up to scientific rigor, and I must admit part of the reason I like it so much is pure nostalgia, as reading it brings back memories of childhood. However, it is certainly entertaining, and as the title suggests, wondrous and strange indeed.

My cousin had this volume as part of a set of encyclopedias! We pored over it constantly as teenagers. I still find this book fascinating, and am sure anyone with a sense of curiosity will enjoy it immensely. Unlike current versions of BOIN, this book is illustrated by Robert Ripley's excellent drawings and cartoons rather than photographs. I think it adds to the mystique of the strange and bizarre, believe it or not!

well written book with helpful examples explaining the content

This textbook is a requirement for a Contemporary Management Theory class that I am taking. I am in the first couple of chapters and so far I am enjoying the material. Very good examples shared to explain the content and the professor loves this edition. My only knock is around the price. $300+ for a book? Come on.... I was able to find it a little cheaper because it was used but these crazy prices are really hurting students.

As a Carolina country boy, I love getting out and getting dirty. it's how I exercise, really...but this book gives me lots of ideas to get my friends out. they're all desk boys...god bless them but they are out of shape...not that i have nothing to improve upon...i've lost weight but I remember the way I looked when I joined the Army... I want to be that fit again.

This Book Can Be Life Changing. If You Allow It!

I am a white senior citizen, far removed from any inner city life. This book, along with Father Greg Boyle's book have given me what I feel is a true insight into the life of the people who do live in that world. The truth is that we ALL are human beings who need a chance in life, sometimes many chances. We need nurturing, education, work that shows our value and sense of community and most of all love. It truly is an emergency in our culture that needs to be rectified. There seems to be an immense amount of true compassion lacking, being replaced only by fear and ignorance. Celeste Fremont has opened a window to understanding that we can all jump in!

Thank you all for sharing your stories, your lives. It is a message that we really are no different at our core, but very different where our beginnings might be.We all strive to find our place of community, of heart and hope to fit in somewhere. I won't forget these books and my own ignorance has been replaced with a sense of love and admiration to all of you who have strived to make a better life. This book can be life changing if you allow it!

It looks like I am readying code

I began reading about Father Greg Boyle after he was the key speaker at a college gradation ceremony I attended early this spring. His book was my first and then I moved on to this book. I have appreciated the individual stories of the homeboys (and girls) near the end of every chapter. And this book has helped to understand the gang mentality much more than Father Greg's book did.
One a negative note, the folks who proofed this book did a miserable job. Perhaps it is changing it from print to electronic copy but it makes the reading much more difficult when the sentences make no sense and you have to go back and delete printed words. The ending of the book is showing the text and space symbols. It looks like I am readying code.
But don't let that stop you from reading this book. If it does for you what it did for me you will look at homeboys, gangs, the system....so much differently than before. And for me, that is good.

I read this after the deeply moving 'Tattoos of the Heart' by Gregory Boyle, who has made working with gang and former gang members his spiritual mission, one that keeps him intensely alive.
This book was good to read afterwards but the one I recommend more is 'Tattoos' My friend went to a 2 day retreat with him and described as tender and soulful.

Decoding Vedic science in modern terms

From the introduction: "K.D. Verma has demystified the Vedic hymns by decoding the symbols, technical terms and concepts, thereby many of the mute problems, some fundamental issues in Indian scientific tradition... Many other occult, esoteric, obscure ideas, concepts and terms in Indian culture have been made intelligible, meaningful, significant, and relevant, even scientific by the author... [who] interprets Vedic and Sankhya tradition in the light of modern science."

Keshav Dev Verma in his Preface: "...my humble submission is that we should regard the Vedas as the Books of Science. ...from time immemorial, the Vedas have been open to all sorts of investigation and their doors have always been ajar for seekers of `The Truth'... I have based my efforts on the treatise named Sankhya." India's tradition is one of open inquiry.

There are many Sanskrit words which K.D. Verma defines and connects with terms of the more modern fields of quantum interpretations. For example BRAHMAGNI "which literally fits to mean absolute zero temperature pervading all over. ... AKAYAM speaks of no geometry, no density and ipso facto utter vacuum. Other nouns specify the attributes of the state of Being beyond the laws and rules of the quantum as well as classical physics."

According to K.D. Verma one of the greatest scholars of the Vedic modern age was Maharshi Dayananda Sarasvati, who "declared that Veda is the book of all true sciences. He emphatically maintained that in ancient India there were aircrafts in use." The word VIMANA (aircraft, "a carrier built upon bird engineering") is found in many Sanskrit texts and there are various descriptions of `aerial' craft in the Mahabharata and the Puranas.

K.D. Verma describes the difficulty in translating the full meaning of the Sanskrit used in the older Vedic texts and how using conventional meanings can be misleading. "The capacity of a Sanskrit term to contain meaning, is enormous, and is revealed only when analysed etymologically. But even such an approach remains wanting..."

I am not a scientist or scholar, however my own quite humble and limited studies into Sanskrit and the Rig Veda have led me to believe that the Sanskrit words there are more like 'spheres' of layered encoded meanings that can be understood on many levels, which would explain why the translations of the Rig Veda are so astonishingly varied. You may disagree with his `inspired' definitions of Sanskrit words, but when you read enough and study deeply, you come to realize that scholars, even Indian Sanskrit scholars, do not and cannot agree on the meaning especially in the Rig Veda. At least he has made a very brave effort, which does make the reader think.

K.D. Verma covers many fascinating topics: PRAKRITI - The Material Cause, MAHAT, AHANKARA, RTA - [he defines as: 1. Prakriti in motion, 2. Kinetic energy, 3. The creative order of the universe, 4. Laws of creation or any creative order], SATYA - [he defines as matter], and others. There is a very useful and thought provoking glossary of Sanskrit terms as he has defined them.

Vedic Physics invites many readings and can be used as a reference book. Because the subject of uniting the ancient Vedic knowledge with modern science and quantum physics is new and just emerging, his book can be enjoyed by the beginner and the more advanced.

I feel that the Rig Veda will one day be interpreted as evidence of a far more technologically advanced civilization. India has already been recognized as the sacred guardian of primordial metaphysics. The incompleteness of modern science by Roger Penrose is quoted in the Foreword: "A scientific world-view which does not profoundly come to terms with the problem of conscious minds can have no serious pretentions to completeness."

I recommend this courageous book for anyone interested in traversing the bridge across time and finding what has been lost. Sooner or later we are going to have to break out of the confines of what we have been indoctrinated to accept as Earth's history, and come to the realization that it is absurd to imagine we are alone in a universe with 300+ billion galaxies.

there are three levels to the universe.
In the open science literature we only study one,

semi mainstream science writer who broaches
other levels of the universe.
Vedic physics may not make ANY sense to you at all.
Buy it anyhow. Buy it, read it once.
As you continue your natural life education the book will open to you as a lotus.
Have this book, it will be burned by the NWO.

He presents studies that show that IQ accounts for only between 4% and 25% of an individual's job success, whereas emotional competence (self-awareness, self-regulation and motivation) is twice as important as purely cognitive abilities in the workplace. Author Goleman now applies in the workplace the ideas in his prior best seller Emotional Intelligence (Bantam, 1995), contending that success and ability in a career cannot be determined solely by intelligence or other skills. Emotional traits making up "EI," and now played out in the corporate world in this follow-up, include self-awareness, motivation, self-control, influence, altruism, empathy, and the ability to love and be loved by others. Real-life examples abound in this serious attempt to relate what the author admits are soft skills in the hard-nosed world of business. With the landscape already carved out in the first work, this sequel is long on interviews, observations, and other attempts to indicate the value of understanding "EI" in business, but it could have benefited from serious editing. The excellent narration by Aaron Meza cannot make up for the listener's need to review the hard copy in order to follow the author's highly complex outline of ideas. Recommended only on demand in larger public libraries.

Not the best way in nor refresher

Goleman was a big deal in the 1990s, and I experienced this book that way when I read the unabridged version. Now, he has been flattered by imitation and assimilation into many related works. By that I mean, some of what he popularized about emotional intelligence, applied to the business world, has been rolled up into cognitive psychology and mainstream business schools teaching. And some of it has not been taken up so much -- the pschodynamic assumptions that are less empirically based.

I do not think one gains very much by going back to the 1990s bit here, and certainly not in this abridged version. It leaves out the connecting hypotheses and research basis. This abridged recording gives just the stories; so you get mostly Goleman the journalist, missing out on Goleman the Ph.D. psychologist. I preferred the whole deal in the unabridged original, not leaving out the innards. I'd recommend, if anything, reading or listening to the original book instead; or perhaps skip ahead to Goleman's Social Intelligence, which though it does not focus on business so much, pulls on more updated research and theory a decade later, in the mid-2000s.

I gave this book as a gift to a colleague who wanted to know more about Emotional Intelligence. As a leadership development practitioner in a large manufacturing company (now retired), I found Daniel Goleman's books fundamental to comprehending and applying EQ to the workplace.

Maybe it is because I am a social worker that I find the content boring, obvious, and presented very laboriously. Maybe the earlier books are better or is more practical. If you need help with understanding the importance of people's personality and blending work relationships with personality and company goals, maybe this is helpful. I found it superficial and not very insightful.
