About the Author
Mark Ciampa is Assistant Professor of Computer Information Systems at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Previously, he served as Associate Professor and Director of Academic Computing for 20 years at Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin, Tennessee. Dr. Ciampa has worked in the IT industry as a computer consultant for the U.S. Postal Service, the Tennessee Municipal Technical Advisory Service, and the University of Tennessee. He is also the author of many Cengage/Course Technology books, including Security+ Guide to Network Security Fundamentals; CWNA Guide to Wireless LANs, 3e; CWSP Guide to Wireless Security; Guide to Wireless Communications; and Networking BASICS. He holds a PhD in digital communication systems from Indiana State University.

Gets the basics down so you can understand everything.

This was the book assigned by my instructor for my Introduction to Networking class; at first I wasn't sure I had even gotten the right book when I saw how old it was, but yes this was the right one. Honestly overlooking the age of the book I would say this is one of the best intro to networking textbooks you are going to find; the chapters are laid out well and the information is top notch. If this book is required for your class, do not balk at the age of the book, all the relevant information is in there.

What you always wanted ton know, but were afraid to ask.

I've been playing with computers since the TRS-80, some of my friends say I'm a Guru. I bought this book for a college class thinking "I'll probably never even open it." Open it I did and learned many details I thought I knew but didn't understand. The why's, when's, and where's that now make networks more understandable. The information in this volume is a little behind, but with the speed of technological advances it could have been printed this morning and I could still say that in all honesty. If you have never dealt with a network (internet excluded)or want to know what is happening when you open a file on a network, this is the book for you. Also, the spiral binding is great if you don't have much room on your desk as you can fold the book over and it takes up half the space. All textbooks should be like this!
